dobyns for 3/4 oz spinnerbaits

Post by georgeweeber » Tue May 24, 2011 5:03 pm

I am looking for a dobyns to throw a 3/4 oz spinnerbaits around heavy cover. I was thinking about the 704. Would that be a good choice?

I use the 733 for lighter structure and I love it for spinnerbaits. I also love that I have the full cork handle. I would go with the 734 then for heavy structure.

The 704, 705, 734 or 735 would all be good for 3/4oz spinnerbaits.

I like the 734 for 3/4 oz spinnerbaits. The 734 also makes an awesome paddletail rod.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

I'd probably go with the 704 or 705 if you are stuck on a 7' rod. If not, the 734 or the 735 depending on how "heavy" the cover is. If you are throwing it on points, deep brushpiles, etc. the 734 would be good. If you are burning it over thick submerged grass, deep/thick tree tops, etc. I'd use a 735. The 734 would cover a much wider range though so if you are limited, the 734 would be my pick for 3/8-1oz spinnerbaits.

Most all of my spinnerbaiting is with the 733 (1/4-3/8oz) and a 734 (3/8-1oz) but when I am fishing the bigger baits (3/4 - 1 1/4oz) in thick cover (usually submerged hydrilla for me) I have started to like the faster tip on the 735 for ripping the bait out of the grass.

Probably just a personal deal though.

I like the 704 C for throwing 3/4 oz blades. The 734 C works really good too.

I went ahead and ordered the 704c. I really dont like the split handle rods but hopefully I can get used to it. I would have gone with the longer 734 with a full grip but our local lake is full of tall trees that you have to manuver through making it difficult to cast a lot of the time. Thank you for the input.
