NRX 854

Post by IDCI42 » Mon May 07, 2012 6:10 pm

Hey guys, I just ordered the NRX 854 for a pitching stick. I plan on throwing 1/4 - 3/4 ounce jigs and weighted plastics around docks and reeds and probably even a little heavier cover. What pound test line would some of you recommend? I was thinking of using 20lb fluro but I am also considering braid. And do any of you use braid and fluro leaders? What would be the max pound test for braid on this rod? I did buy the 893 for a little deeper applications using 20lb fluro and have been pretty happy with that. Thanks for any replys!

It's a great rod...I have had a blast with mine so far ...I only use sufix 832 braid and flouro leaders. The sensitivity is outstanding. I haven't had the need to tie on anything heavier than 20lb-30lb. That might change with slop stuff later this summer, but I'd probably hit that mostly with my f6 72.

Ultimately, the noise is minimal and the pay-off (relative to sensitivity) makes braid on an NRX a no brainer for me. You will like it a lot.

ok, thanks! If need be do you think this rod could handle 65lb braid for heavier cover?

No idea, haven't done anything close to that nor needed to. Others may have better input.

I've thrown paddletails in the grass with 55lb Daiwa Samurai braid on the 854 and it handled the task well. I would step up to the NRX 873 CRR for much heavier work around grass, etc. I've actually thrown some frogs and toads on 70lb Samurai braid with the 873 and thought it did a fine job considering the fact that it's a great jig/worm rod!

Thanks for the info! I think the 873 is next on my list!

Both my NRX854s have 20# XPS fluoro on them, I think that works really good.
