What Frog Rod Do You Use?

Post by SamF » Thu Jan 24, 2013 3:17 pm

I'm thinking of getting a new frog rod this year so let's hear what you're tossing them with and why. I usually throw Spro and Koppers in heavy cover. Does anyone use a Dobyn's Champion 736C? If so, how's that?

Falcon cara 7'3 amistad. Nice short handle, soft enough tip, great backbone, balances great with a 7oz reel.

Never tried a 736C but I use the 735C paired with a Revo Premier 7.1:1
I mostly (95%) throw Live Target Frogs in heavy to very heavy cover.
Never a problem with getting them out of the slop.

I use a 735c, I prefer it's MH action over the Hvy 736c.

I would think the 736c would be more then capable of throwing frogs, but more specifically oriented for pitching and flipping IMO.

Haven't use it yet for frogs but the MB X4 Destruction will do the job for me.

I use a Powell 735C with a Citica E 201 spooled with 50# Power Pro for all my frog and toad fishing. I mostly throw River2Sea and Spro hollow body frogs and Gambler Cane Toads. It casts all of them great, the best being the hollow bodies. I fish in the heaviest grass I can find and I've never had a problem getting fish out.

It was my first Powell rod and I liked it so much that I bought 4 more Powell's. I've been 100% satisfied with it as a frog rod.

I was using the 736C but found it to be a tad overkill...the tip of the 735c was softer and let me walk the dog better. That's not to say that it couldnt be done it was just easier for me....

I know guys who use the savvy 735 specifically as a frogging rod because it is well suited for it, cheaper and if you are using a rod specifically for frogging, don't have to worry about sensitivity. Since i double my 735c as a jig rod, I wanted something that had abit more sensitivity when I wanted to use it for bottom application and such...

A novice's opinion compared to those on here but just figured I would throw it out there if you wanted to save some money.

I'm using the Champion 735. Just felt the rod loaded better casting/pitching. Never had a problem getting a fish out of the nastiest stuff.

Lots of guys I know tell me I need to go to the Champion 736 but I haven't seen the need.

thanks guys, some really good information and opinions here. what have you heard about the iROD Air Series? they have a 7'5" heavy / fast that looks very well suited for the frog. tip probably isn't too stiff to walk the dog and i'm sure it has some backbone. in the end, i may stick with dobyn's since that's what i primarily use.

I used the 736c for a whole year, did the job, but I think I am going to go to a 735 next year for a little more tip for walking my frogs

I'm actually thinking of adding another rod just for frogs this year. That way I can have two rigged with different colors instead of having to waste time swtiching them up. I'll probably get the Coalition Weapon 735 to put a frog on permanently. It'll be my main frog stick. I wasn't too sure about the camo look on the rods initially. Turns out in person, it really looks cool. Only negative is I prefer full cork handles.
