Rod for Tubes/Shakeyhead

Hi

Dont fish these techniques often. Looking to try it this year. Looking for a rod recommendation that can handle tubes along with shakeyheads. I think a spinning setup may be best. Prefer Dobyns,G Loomis or Shimano rods.

Dobyns champion 682/702 or 683/703... If you want to step up to the dx series, many people talk highly of the 743 but I have never used it

Check out the senko rod post for my comments there. The 702 works great for tubes.

Check out the Kistler KLX shaky head/ tube 6'10 spinning rod. Won't set you back as much as the above mentioned rods, and worth every penny.

I've only felt it in a store, but if you don't mind longer rods. The Dobyns DX763 was created for dragging tubes, but has an excellent tip and the backbone to set the hook on shakeyheads. I was very impressed with the action. Loomis the GLX JWR 902s is also an awesome rod. I really like longer rods for tubes and shakeyheads.

If you like shorter rods the JWR 852s or the DX742s. I haven't fished the Dobyns dx742, but I've heard it's a great rod for the intended purposes.

The dx742 might be a little light for tubes but is a great drop / shot shakey rod.

I have handled the dx742, liked the rod, but will it be powerful enough. What about the new glx 852? How does it compare to the nrx?

Since you don't throw them often id go with a Dobyns champion 702sf. I have it and love it. It may not be as sensitive as a DX but its still very sensitive, and handles tubes and shakey heads perfectly.

I have the NRX852s and have handled the GLX852 as well. The NRX852 is my favorite spinning rod and would be great for what you are looking for. The GLX version is about 1/2 power heavier but is a great rod. If you didn't have the NRX version at the same time, you probably couldn't feel much of a difference. Prefer the NRX but if you don't fish this technique ofter and you're looking to save some $, look for a rep sample of the GLX; will not be disappointed either way.

I use mainly 702 and 742 Dobyns for these applications, that being said, I normally run braid to fluoro leader, if straight fluoro, I'd probably bump up to 703 & 743

Thanks for the suggestions. Going to take a look at the dx742 and nrx 852. I currently have a spare daiwa sol spinner, time to upgrade. Are the jdm comparables to the ci4 any different? Prob want to spend $200-300, definitely not another stella. Ones enough!

I have a Daiwa Sol 2000 on a last generation Shimano Cumara 7'2" Medium Spinner. Works great with tubes, dropshot and shakey heads.

Also have the Dobyns Champio 703SF with a Shimano Sustain 2500. Also casts all those mentioned well. And will handle jerkbaits also.
