Dobyns DX 746c Rod?
Has anyone tried the new dobyns dx 746c rod yet? Would like to know how it compares to the champion 736c, weight, balance and strength. I know the handle is 1/2" shorter and the action is rated fast as compared to the 736c extra fast. Thanks guys
Re: Dobyns DX 746c Rod?
I picked up a new DX746 and a DX765! They came this last week but I haven't had a chance to do much more than unwrap them. I do have (unspooled) Chronarch D7 mounted on them.
The 736 does have a longer handle. I measured the handle as being 3/4" longer on the 736 than the DX746.
The 736 balanced with my finger against the reel nut. The DX746 balanced with my finger literally in front of the reel nut. Since the reel nuts are different between the two series, I matched up the reel seats (trigger points) to determine the balance point. When the triggers are matched up, the balance point is the same. In other words, the balance point as compared to reel position, is the same between the two rods.
Keeping in mind that I'm only pushing the tip down on the carpet for the following statement. The 736 does have a faster action than the DX746. As these are pretty stout rods, this is pushing down a bit.
I'm tempted to get out and fish the (new) rods just to see how they feel. Thing is, I really doubt I'd catch fish using the techniques I'd actually use on them since it is the middle of Winter here. Yeah, I know, we're having unseasonably warm weather.....it's still Winter here.....
Anyway, I'm still in the process of going through all my rods and reels. Hopefully, I get them spooled up soon. Once I do that, I can see how they feel with a weight on them at least.

Re: Dobyns DX 746c Rod?
Hey civ,
I have a 736 which pulls duty as frog/heavy jig and trig rod. I was thinking of upgrading to the 746 for these. Based on your initial take, think the dx 746 could do it?

I think so. Right now, the Champion 735 is pulling frog duty for me. The DX746, being a more powerful rod, gets to that 'lock up' position just as fast. I also think the action will make it better for casting the hollow belly frogs. With the 736, I never really feel connected to the bait on the cast. I know a lot of guys don't care about that but I do. It definitely has the power to turn the fish and get them out of the cover.grantman83 wrote:Hey civ,

As far as a jig rod, I'm thinking it will be a better big jig rod. Besides the fact that it is going to be more sensitive, the fast action (vs the xfast of the 736) will be better IMO. I'm thinking I'll like it better than the 736 for the same reasons I prefer the action of the DX795Flip over the Champion 805Flip for punching. (not quite an apple to apple comparison but along the same lines anyway) Namely, I like a little more tip or give if you will. I know it has plenty of power to set on them so that isn't an issue. I think the tip will allow the fish to eat just a little better.....so I won't have to be as patient. Another big thing is that when a fish gets stuck in cover (momentarily!!), it will give me just a little more forgiveness to help keep them pinned.
One of the things I'm wondering is if the rod will work for punching..... I know it is shorter than the DX795Flip and the Champion 766. Those length of those sticks do offer some advantages when fishing mats. Still, I'm wondering.

You are high class lol. I got plain power pro

I have ordered a DX746 and will be using it for heavy jigs and frogging.
I sure hope that it will handle frogs as well as my 735C did.
If not, I'll have to purchase a new 735C

I'll get out on the water soon just to test out the DX746 and the DX765. I'm fairly confident I won't be catching fish throwing frogs and pitching jigs right now but I'm itching to try the rods. Won't be like a actual report where I can tell you how it handled fish but at least it will give us ideas on how it handles weight(s) and hopefully comparisons to my other Dobyns.StarTzar wrote:I have ordered a DX746 and will be using it for heavy jigs and frogging.

Don't you punch on the delta in the winter? I love punching dead hyacinths when it gets cold. Usually a 1 to 1 1/4 oz gets through fine and figured the 746 could handle that. Just wondering.civicrr wrote:I'll get out on the water soon just to test out the DX746 and the DX765. Honestly, I usually chase stripers with flyrods this time of year. Sometimes I run up to the foothill lakes for a change of pace. Delta can fish tough in winter.
Being off the Delta or chasing stripers in winter makes me want to chase largies come late winter/early spring.
