I was faced with the same dilemma and was set to buy a Dobyns Champion 685CB as I prefer to have a little more power and tip for my jerkbait rod. That was until last night when someone put a Megabass Orochi XX Casting Rod 6'8" Megabass MH Jerkbait Special in my hands.

It just felt awesome and was bought on a whim. Now I have to wait until the ice melts before I use it.

Needless to say, there are many good choises out there. It all depends on what you want to spend.

Nice. Love mine. You'll slowly switch out your rods...

At this point, I will be happy if I like the rod. I have no intention of getting rid of any of my Dobyns.
Depending on how well I like the Jerkbait special, I may end up with another XX rods, but I still can't say enough good things about my Champions and Champion Extremes.

Lucky Craft made a rod specifically for pointer 100's
it was 6'10"

does anyone have one?
Why did they discontinue it?

I really like my gloomis jerk bait rod, 6'3" medium/heavy. It handles all sizes of jerkbaits. I like the short handle and short length . im rarely splashing water with the tip.

For smaller jerkbaits, like the Orbit 80, Falcon makes a Cara 7' Shoal Cranker rod that works really well.
I've also used an older GL3 Loomis popper rod, a 7' 00 power, for smaller jerkbaits and it works great, too, but it's no longer available.
With smaller baits and lighter action rods, the key is getting the rod to load properly. I find that keeping the bait up nearer the tip and using a wrist cast works best.
For heavier jerkbaits, there are a ton of great rods out there.

Do you guys prefer a shorter rod when jerkbait fishing? When ever I used a jerk bait last year I was throwing it on a dobyns champion 703c and thought that worked pretty well. Now I am debating between the 704cb and 684cb and was wondering if there is a benefit to the extra length.

For me, the 7' rod makes longer casts easier, and I can still work the lure without slapping the water. I'm 5'9" and have average arms so shorter people might like a shorter rod.

Sorry to bump such an old thread but I was leaning towards the Jerkbait Special for throwing 1.5 squarebills, and was just wondering if this rod would be good for that application?

That rod is perfect for 1.5 megabass squarebills. Awesome rod. Another consideration (but more $$) is the megabass X7 cyclone advantage - amazing stick for squarebills and jerkbaits.

My preferred rod for square bills is definitely the Flat Side.

I prefer a fairly crisp and twitchy action rod. I don't like it when the rod feels like its weaker than the jerkbait, as if it is struggling to pull it through the water. Rods with spiral-x graphite are good in my opinion. Steez graphite is also very crisp...

IF you can find one a Cumulus 610MH makes just about the most perfect jerkbait I can imagine. Incredibly crisp and quick on the twitch with the most supple action when you load up on the hookset. Perfect power for open water fish fighting.
