New GLX vs old GLX MBR842C and SJR782??
New GLX vs old GLX MBR842C and SJR782??
TT,
I own 2 GLX rods, mentioned above, and use them for Smallmouth when I'm back home. I think they are great and I do like rods matching in casting/spinning.
Are the new GLX rods as light and sensitive? Do they feel better, worse, same? I really like the newer spinning handle and would prefer a longer rod than my 782. Thanks.
Rick

Aside being "better", my understanding is that the new GLXs are slightly less powerful.

the new glxs def have a softer tip than the old glx models i have noticed while using some of them. I had the new glx 854 and 853 and both of their tips where more soft than the older model glx rods

Thanks for the replies. So I would want to maybe go up 1 power if I like the feel of my old GLX then?
Anyone else have both that can compare feel, weight, etc? Thanks.

This would be an overstatement. The MBR 842 and SJR 782 GLXs are pretty soft rods..I owned them both forever. The old BCR line was a different story as they were fairly stout for their rating, in some models, with a true ex fast taper. If you are looking at the "new" GLXs in the JWR line, there is no need to jump in power..you will be way above your intended power..which new GLXs are you looking at, exactly?karirick wrote:Thanks for the replies. 853C AND 852S would be what I would look at. I'm not committed to these, as I am hoping to see/handle the new IMX soon, and maybe go that route, but was curious if my current GLX are still the way to go.
Thanks for the reply.

Both of those rods are considerably(vague term) more powerful than the MBR 842 and SJR 782, respectively. The 852Cs are similar to the 842, but typically faster.. I personally can't think of a GLX JWR spinning rod that it as soft as the SJR 782..I went from the SJR 782 GLX to the NRX 822 SYR, and couldn't be happier...karirick wrote:853C AND 852S would be what I would look at. I actually always wanted a hair more power and length than the 782 had, but in a smiliar or better blank...that's exactly what the NRX offered. I didn't get into the MBR 842 too much..never fit a lot of my needs...but the 852 GLX/NRX are great, slightly faster alternatives..If tyou are throwing moving baits on the 842, I'd stick with it...It its for bottom bait techniques, the 852 makes a good alternative...If you are happy with the 842's action, I would stick with it, as its wonderfully versatile..

Man I know that the NRX is the way to go, but I just dropped big $$ on 3 Certate's and 4 Stella's since returning to Active Duty.
Maybe I need to sell a few spinning reels and double duty them (which I hate) and get 2 new NRX's. Great feedback, you described my thoughts on the GLX SJR perfectly.

although its not a GLX, if you love the taper of the SJR782 and want the same thing but longer (as I did) they make a GL3 SJR842 which is awesome. I have it and it is a great rod. same as the 782 but longer. and the skeletal cork handles on the GL3 rods are the best spinning handles around. much nicer than the ones on the classic GLX and IMX spin jig rods where the lock nut comes down from the top and you are holding the lock nut directly when you fish with it..
the GL3 models are very good blanks, even though they get a bad rap because they are not IMX/GLX rods.
just some food for thought

Hulkster this would probably sound stuck up on another forum but I do have the 842 GL3, got it at TW for a great price couple years ago, I just can't put a Stella on that rod. It weighs 4.7oz, which by today's standards is heavy (at least to me).Hulkster wrote:although its not a GLX, if you love the taper of the SJR782 and want the same thing but longer (as I did) they make a GL3 SJR842 which is awesome. I really like it, but would want an IMX or higher, and probably am going to sell some stuff and just get the NRX's. I started low end and now have moved very high end for all my reels, but I know I can't always maintain that level of gear, so I think the NRX will be good enough for years, especially with expeditor in case I have bad luck with them, although I have never broke a Loomis. Thanks for the reply though, much appreciated.
