How many blank producers in the U.S.A. ?

Post by smalljaw » Thu Apr 10, 2014 5:11 am

I was reading the description on the Cabelas American made TXS rods and noticed they used Batson/Alps guides with aluminum oxide inserts and so I asked if the blanks were made in America, which I was told they were but they are not made by Batson. The description says "intermediate modulous graphite" for the blank and while we know a lot of what is said is just marketing ploys I have to wonder because my local has these and now that they are on sale I'm really thinking about the 7'1" cranking rod and they feel pretty nice, the build quality is nice on them too, but the feel of the rod in hand is what surprised me, they seem to be decent rods but I'm curious to the possibilities for making the blank.

I think Batson's blanks are made in China.

American manufacturers that I'm aware of:

St Croix
G Loomis
North Fork Composites
Lamiglass (MHX)

Preface that some of the "lower end" models may be manufactured outside of the U.S. Also, not all "rolled in the U.S.A." blanks are from materials MADE in the U.S.A....many are rolled by the company, but the material/resin is purchased from a manufacturer.

- Lami

- GLoomis

- St. Croix

- Seeker

- Sage

- Scott Rods

- Hydra

- NFC

- Talon

- Orvis

- Calstar

- Rogue

- GUSA (I believe they have been brought back from the dead?)

- Thomas & Thomas

I am sure that are many I am missing.

The last I knew... only the Batson blanks that ended with "+" were made in the US. All other were imported.

There are a few others that you couldn't name. They don't do anything but contract work and you've never heard of them before and you'll probably never hear of them unless you're looking to buy 10,000 blanks.

For instance...the last I knew...Hydra doesn't actually roll blanks. Those are contract rolls. But, they are done in the US by an outfit you've probably never heard of.

Pretty good list though

Rolling graphite shafts is done by numerous companies. I've seen golf club shafts, arrow shafts, kite poles, etc being done inside a rod facility. The opposite can be true as well. The principals and the equipment are the same.

99% chance the blanks are made somewhere other than the U.S

I asked and then I actually called and I was told that the blanks were manufactured in the U.S. but they are not allowed to say who made them. I kind of thought the same thing as you but one thing I found is when you want to know something from Cabelas they will usually answer you and in my case, they called my house after I called customer service and let them know that I didn't believe the blanks were U.S. made. The guy told me they had the idea to produce a made in America rod in the works for 2 years and the biggest part of it was making sure the blanks were made here and not just imported and then built here.

Maybe I mixed them up. IIRC somewhere on the mudhole forum they referenced Lami as rolling MHX for them, I'll have to double check

Edit:
Looks like I'm wrong, sorry for the mis-information

Todd Vivian came from Lami, that's probably where the confusion came from. Mudhole is claiming they manufacture the MHX line:

http://forums.mudhole.com/index.php?showtopic=3335

They don't indicate where they're manufactured, but it's conspicuously missing from their list of what is done in the US (design, test, package), so I'd assume China, just b/c that's where everything is made now.

Does Mudhole own Am. Tack? There's something to this effect rattling around in my head, but I can't remember details (some alcohol rattling around in there too right now :D )

Yeah, my builder here told me who the company is that rolls the Hydra NGs...an American company in AR, Rebrod, IIRC? They also contract large quantities as an OEM (as you noted).

Here is a nice article on this company: http://www.bradwiegmann.com/tackle/rods ... ansas.html

I would love to get ahold of some Scott Rods blanks for custom build! :big grin: 8-) :evil22:
