This has been a topic that will present 2 different views and the only way for you to know which is right is for you to fish with both of them and see what works for you. The first view is one I include myself in and this is a shorter, fast action rod in a medium power, this allows you to have full control of the lure as you can use hard downward strokes of the rod without hitting the water because of the shorter length, and the medium power offers enough forgiveness to fight a fish hooked with a treble hook. The other view is those using 7' rods with a moderate action, cranking style rods, these rods you work the bait with a sideways rip and the length and action allow you to fight the fish with leverage and a parabolic bend that keeps fish pinned. There are pros and cons to each, the short, fast action, medium power rods offer full control of the bait allowing you to make it dart and dance and I believe it results in more strikes, however the trade of is that you are going to lose fish, a properly set drag is going to help but it isn't going to have the landing percentage of a rod with a parabolic action. The longer cranking style rod is going to allow you longer cast and the ability to land almost every fish that is hooked but you lose some control of the lure as the length requires a shorter down stroke to avoid hitting the water or having to rip the bait sideways and that, along with the slower tip recovery makes for a less erratic action which may result in less strikes. So you either get more strikes with less fish landed or less strikes with more fish landed, but this is generally speaking. I have a few jerkbait set ups, and I have to admit that for smaller baits like the Rapala Flat Rap size 8 and the LC Pointer 78, a short, moderate action rod works excellent, but for larger baits it is still the medium power, fast action that I like in lengths from 6'3" up to 6'10".

My go too setup is a MB X4 Oneten, Daiwa Steez with SV 105 spool, 11lb Sunline Defier. I also use the X4 Black Elseil with the same reel and line if I need to have 2 setups on the deck.
