DX 742C vs. Phenix M1 MX74ML
DX 742C vs. Phenix M1 MX74ML
Super specific rod question here folks. Was looking to get a longer medium- medium light
casting rod to fish 6lb test (light plastics, wacky rigs, neko rigs, etc.).
I used to fish a DX 742c, and even though it was rated 8-14,
the tip was light enough to fish 6. Problem is, I sold it, and its quite
expensive to get it back.
Does anybody here own the Phenix M1 MX74ML? its a medium light fast action 7"4' casting
rod that goes for about $175. I wouldn't expect it to be on the same level as the dobyns, but
anybody have any feedback on this rod? thanks!

Hmmm, doesn't seem to be anyone who has that specific phenix rod.
Perhaps a more general question then. Anyone who is a
phenix rod users, or maybe someone who owns an M1 rod...
would you say, in general, the action (ie, medium, medium heavy)
of the M1 series is lighter, heavier, or comparable than the dobyns extreme series? Same
question on the tapers (ie, ex-fast, fast, moderate)?
Any feedback would be appreciated!

Re: DX 742C vs. Phenix M1 MX74ML
Well I can compare the M1 72H and the DX 744. The Phenix is definitely on the lighter side compared to the DX. The M1 is supposed to be x-fast, but the 744 has a faster tip (at least to me). I think the Phenix fishes more like a MH, like my 843 Loomis. Of course, this is only my opinion, but I think I have read other users who think that the Phenix ratings are on the lighter side as well.

Thanks... this kind of info is super helpful. Assuming the power rating is a bit lighter, a phenix medium light may fish more like a dobyns light action, which wouldn't be horrible (I have the dx 701c...) but just not what im looking for.darrin wrote:Well I can compare the M1 72H and the DX 744. Also... would you say sensitivity wise, your M1 is somewhere in the neighborhood of the DX?darrin wrote:Well I can compare the M1 72H and the DX 744. Anybody know how to get a hold of Vince Borges, the Phenix guru? I messaged him some questions regarding the rod
but can't seem to get a hold of him.

Re: DX 742C vs. Phenix M1 MX74ML
I"m sorry, i don't own a 744ML, but I have a few M1s - a 72MH, 2x 72H, 78H, and a UMR800MH
I wouldn't say the rods are lighter power than what they rate, but the tapers are slower and the tips are softer than what you might expect. The 744ML should be a great rod for the techniques and line class you are inquiring. I've been using a Recon 713 for similar techniques, the power ratings are about the same, and i enjoy it.

Again, thanks for this feedback... Tremendously helpful. I was thinking about the recon 2 713 as well but couldn't find it at any of the retailers near me that have phenix rods. I've read that the m1s are bulletproof and light, but the recons have a higher grade of graphite, and thus more sensitive. Decisions, decisions.robchik04 wrote:I"m sorry, i don't own a 744ML, but I have a few M1s - a 72MH, 2x 72H, 78H, and a UMR800MH
