Rod for large crankbaits

Post by zelmo » Thu Jul 02, 2015 11:02 pm

Need a recommendation for a rod to use with deep diving crankbaits. I would also like to be able to use it for 3/4 oz lipless cranks. I usually like a rod for lipless to be a bit stiffer than a regular crankbait rod, so is this possible?

This is the only thing I will use it for so versatility is not needed.

The Dobyns Champion 805 CBRM has become my favorite deep crankbait rod after sending years with the St. Croix Magnum Cranker and Cumara 7'11"MH-F Reaction/CB. It would feel big and cumbersome to me for lipless, as I like to fish them with the tip a little higher.

Thank you. I do have other rods to use for the lipless so that is not terribly important.

An 8' rod? Wow.

GLX 855 CBR. A little stiffer than their normal cranking rods to help rip lipless cranks. Have thrown a few deep divers on it and it handled it without a problem. I like longer rods(7'6-7'11)for deep cranking and shorter rods(7'-7'3) for lipless but this rod has worked for me when needed. Great all around cranking rod.

Not sure what your preference is, but you have a lot of choices. Graphite, glass or composite. $$ is another choice you have to make. The Dobyns' Champion is suppose to be a very good cranking rod. You might take a look at the Powell Max 3D 7115. Phenix has several composite rods for cranking. Like I said earlier....You have some research to do with choices on top of choices.

The dobyns 805rm is the standard for deep cranking. I haven't thrown a 8xd/10xd on this rod, but spro dd, Dd22, 6xd, will throw them as far as you need. Can be had for under $200 during sales.

In most cases, casting distance is one of the, if not the most important variable in fishing a deep crankbait and getting it to max depth...that's why most rods designed to throw these baits exclusively are 7'10"-8'0".

I tend to throw that 3/4oz lipless more then the DD22 but use a gloomis custom 847 Crankbait rod for both. I have though recently about going with a longer rod but decided not to mess with what is not broken.

L.C. Cranking Rod 7'6" Heavy Long Cast SP. I have been using this rod since May. I have really enjoyed it.

Dobyns 805CBRM is my choice. If that seems a bit long and you favor glass composite, Dobyns will be offering a Champion 736 Glass. This should be an interesting rod because it's first designation is a chatterbait rod. Can't wait for that one.

I used the Cumara 7'11"MH-F Reaction/CB for a long time and really liked it. I found the Dobyns 805CBRM to be heavy to use for long periods. I tried a few others and recently got the 13 Fishing Envy Black Crankenstein 7'11" and love it! lighter. Handles the work well and could throw the traps you are looking to use as well.

G. Loomis CBR 957 GLX is awesome! Shimano is also coming out with a 7'10" Crucial that should be great as well as I've used the older models for the last few years.

Not sure if the handle material is an issue, but I have really enjoyed the Cashion crankbait rod I got this year. I got the 10XD rod and liked it so much I got a couple other lengths for smaller cranks. I'm a big fan of non cork grips, so I really like the grip.

2 rods come to mind, Kistlers Mark Rose Offshore 7'-6" 6xd 5xd and lipless cranking rod med. hvy $219.95
and KLX Mark Rose 7'-11" 10xd sexy spoon and Swimbait heavy moderate $229.95

Both are great rods and they will rip traps out of the grass!! :D :D
