I've got the three NRX rods you reference. The 852s and 852c are the same blanks, this was also confirmed by Loomis customer service when I asked them. Sorry, but I can't comment on the 842s and jerkbaits because I just bought it a few months ago and haven't had a chance to use it yet... 95-97 degrees in the sun on the the water is too hot for me. It does have a pretty soft tip section, so I don't know but it will be interesting to find out. Hopefully, in a few more weeks I can give you an answer.

The 842S works well for a lot of applications. The smallest jerkbaits I've thrown on it have been a Megabass X-80 Trick Darter and a Jackall DD Squirrel 79SP. I like it especially for the Vision 110 and 110+1... but picked up an Expride to take over those duties.

I've been using the 842C for my jerkbait rod for a while now. Works excellent for everything from 1/4oz Xrap 08 to a 1/2oz Silent Pointer. Love it for light jigs and topwater as well. The tip is very light an rebounds fast when twitching a jerkbait.

Not sure I I should go with the 852s or 842s ...

How much softer is the 842 vs 852?

I just played with both rods carefully pushing them side by side on the carpet and feeling/observing the flex in about the first 3rd of each from the tip. The 852s reaches the stiffer backbone section noticeably quicker, as one would expect. It definitely makes the 852s feel like it will have better control for jerkbaits, and more sensitivity and quicker response for bottom contact fishing. If I had to guess, I would say it has a subjective "overall" stiffer feel of about 10-15% more, but remember both have the exact same line rating of 6-12lbs. and a lure rating of 1/8-3/8oz. The fast versus extra-fast is what is making the difference.

I have converted all my crankbaits to "Owner" single hook replacements so I would not hesitate to use either for this purpose. But if using trebles I don't think the 852s would have a problem with crankbaits/jerkbaits - after all it is still only a "2 power" medium rod with a soft tip section and unless you are extremely aggressive during the hookset would not experience any problems. So, given a choice if I could own "only" one the 852s would be it.

By the way, when I talked to Loomis customer service he told me the 802 is softer than both the 842/852. He rated them from stiffest to softest as 852>842>802. I've never used an 802, so can't really give personal experience about what he said.
