I will say that Shimreels' novel approach to tape the rod in its packaging to a shower rod and put that in a triangular box seems to work just fine, but I'd definitely feel safer with PVC à la Plat.

Pvc would be best but cardboard tubes in good shape seem fine. Not the flimsy ones either

PVC, bends doesn't break. Knot on wood. Cardbroad seems OK.

Received a FED EX packed Rod today. They put it in 2 box halves that slid inside the other. BUT they did not tape the point where they joined so it collapsed like an accordion.

I received a LOOMIS OLD STYLE GLX 803 in 3 pieces!!

The lesson here is to PACK THE ROD YOURSELF!!

I'll sometimes ship cheap rods in TW tubes cut under 8', but anything of value gets PVC. Worth the ~$7.

Yea PVC is best, I got a rod shipped in a quality cardboard tube but somehow it sill got broken and arrived bent. Luckily the rod was still fine but it could have easily ended up broken.

I remember when a bunch of us ordered on the giant sale from Japan this winter and someone found out they were shipping in cardboard boxes. I actually was pleasantly surprised with the rigidity of them. PVC is the safest. Cardboard tubes weaken fast and get re-used way too often.
