What to do with broken rod components?

Post by Shim_Dai_Ano_Wa » Fri Oct 30, 2015 11:26 am

I'm sure many of us have several broken rods sitting around?

What do your guys do with it?

Is there any use for the components?,

I have several new rods that I broke the rod tip off and I get depressed over it but at least I can put another rod tip on it, but what about those that are broken mid section?

Do we strip the guise off the rods?

What about the grips? Are they trash or what? Any idea?

I save the guides, I have two full sets of SIC just in case I ever need to do a repair. I guess you could save the reel seats but you're gonna have to be somewhat handy to reuse those.

I strip and keep the guides for repairs on other rods. Quality components are scarce down here.

Keep the handle, mount a reel, and make a lure retriever out of it. I did this, putting on an old round reel on a rod that had a couple guides left. 80lb braid and a hound dog lure retriever and you're good to go.

Saving rod with one guide.

Also a reel mount too..

Man even with one broken guide tip. Kite fishing should be fun lying flat on the ground.

Anymore ideas?

If you have half a rod, make an antenna cover for your vehicle. They look pretty cool :D

Guides are a must save. Depends on how big of a rod, u can make a gaff. I've even stripped a blank to make it for a top piece for a surf rod.

Mount an old reel on the handle with one guide, and use it when you want to remove line that's still good from another reel. Makes it easy to save and reinstall later.

I send them off for repair or replacement - do they have a warranty?

we all need more hobbies to use up disposable income. learn to build rods; not that hard to do. if you can put gears and bearings in today's reels you can do rods. you don't have to spend all kinds of money to get into it. welcome to another dark side!
you can find weird things to do with broken rod parts. I picked an old shimano fightin' or speedmaster rod that was short maybe 18". I have a tip section from something that will make about an 8' or 9' rod for some technique yet to be discovered. add an extension/rod section to a fly rod and you now have a switch rod. (note to self-learn to switch cast)I've made two switch rods from fly rod blanks.
you can strip guides off the rod and make an extension for a blank you wish was 4", 6" or 1' longer. cork and eva/foam are destined to be pitched but guides can be saved and reused. reel seats can be saved but may not be worth the effort. tip tops can be removed and saved.
as Mothra suggested, I use a butt section of an old broken casting rod with a reel on it dedicated to a plug knocker. makes throwing twenty dollar baits into timber a lot easier to do(makes getting them back a lot easier, too). when I get around to it, I think I am going to build myself a light Sage casting rod-7 1/2' from a spinning rod I have. truly a custom rod. gonna use a short section of rod, 18" or so, to extend rod to 7 1/2', maybe 8'.
