Favorite 3/8 shallow cranking rod?

Post by Bass1980 » Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:41 am

Just want to hear your opinions on your favorite 3/8oz shallow cranking rod. I don't crank a lot and didn't think I would ever buy a dedicated rod for this but I guess this would complete the lineup for 2016 for me.

On my radar is the GLX 843 cbr, 846 cbr, and X7 super elseil. Not on my radar are glass rod. Wouldn't mind hearing more about these rods or others you prefer.

I know these rods are only in Australia but they are amazing, super-lightweight, Fuji k semi micro guides, Fuji reel seats and graphite micro tapping construction. http://www.wilsonfishing.com.au/_produc ... 7100-.aspx

The Loomis 843 CBR is perfect for that, I don't think cranking requires a GLX but if you have then why not, right? 3/8oz is right in the wheelhouse of that rod.

I'm not a big fan of throwing cranks but I do have them and throw them once in a while. My buddy builds rods with St Croix Avid blanks. I have the 7' MM Avid (medium moderate). It is a fantastic crank bait rod for small - medium cranks. It is also under $200.

I don't crank a ton so I forget the weight of every lure. For me, the rod I throw a clunn square bill with is fundamentally different then the rod I throw a smaller 4 to 6ft deep diving crank. When you say 3/8oz shallow crank I am assuming you are talking about more my 4-6ft wiggle wart type bait which would be a traditional match for a CBR843.

What I use will surprise a little but I will plant seed for a rode less traveled. I found that a Crucial 6'6mf dropshot casting rod was excellent for small cranks. Initially I discovered I liked my old loomis mbr 782 and from that realized my crucial had a more parabolic shape that made it ideal for cranks. I use both the crucial and mbr782 for jerkbaits as well. What I like about the crucial is how sensitive the rod is. I don't get the same feel when I use my cbr's and the rods get a bit heavier.

G Loomis mbr 782 for jerkbaits and small cranks works well. Also I use GLX 855cbr works well for small up to 6xd

I have a X7 Super Elseil and it's become my favorite rod. Handles 1/4 oz, poppers very well. Great little crankbait rod. It's light and has a parabolic bend, but is not whippy.

My favorite for the applications you have listed would be a megabass orochi xx flat side special. Amazing rod for the money, very sensitive, and excellent performance for hard baits in the 1/4 to 3/4 oz range.

perfect action and gets the job done.

I use a Megabass Phase 3 F3 68 Griffon that feels just right to me.

Would prefer the rod to be closer to 7ft. I'll dig more into xx flat side special and 843 cbr.

My GLX 783C CBR paired with a Chronarch ci4+ is light-ish shallow cranking nirvana.

Yeah I may be buying another 1-2 of them honestly. I love it for 3/8-1/2 cranks which is its main duty. In the winter I use 1/16-3/8oz jigs on it. Great little topwater stick too. So versatile. I toss a lot of LV100's, Spro MD's, and SK 3XD's on it.

I throw DT-6, DT-4, and 1.5 square bills on a GLX845cbr. I am not a big fan of whippy rods. This rods does a g. reat job on these baits for me. Do you need a GLX for throwing cranks, maybe not but if you can swing it I say go for it.
