Phenix Recon 764 vs 766 BIG difference in power?

Post by webertime » Mon Feb 29, 2016 6:31 am

I already have a Phenix Recon 766 and like it a lot and want a rod with a bit less power for dragging big footballs and Carolina Rigs. Is the "4" a markedly lighter powered rod than the "6"?

Thanks all.

I'm very interested as well, although the original TT review of the original recon showed both the 764 and 766 as being good for flipping, pitching and punching.

Id imagine so. Phenix rods have definite differences in power and my 766 is a beast of a rod. I dont have lure ratings in front of me but Im sure the 4 power is probably an ounce lower than my 766 at 2 oz max.

I ended up with an 804. It's significantly softer than the 766.

I want to get one but I need something I can throw 3/8oz swim jigs with and throw 1oz punch jigs without any worries. The 764 shows a 3/8 to 1-1/4 range but the 766 shows 3/8 to 2-1/2 I'm just worried about sensitivity with the 766 for swim jigs. I know it would be better to get 2 different rods but I can't afford that and I need a longer rod for both so it seemed like the best option.

Ive punched with rods rated to 1oz before.

You will struggle casting and feeling the swimjig on the 766. Ive done it before in a pinch and it was terrible. Its a very technique specific rod. I use mine for punching, frogging, umbrellas and swimbaits.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely be getting the 764 then, I was gonna get a castaway skeleton v2 in 7'6" heavy fast but I haven't seen any reviews for it and the phenix has better components and a lot of reviews.

A 3/8oz swimjig with a trailer will weigh close to an ounce. 766 will throw that.

Yeah but feeling those bites on a swim jig requires good sensitivity and the 766 won't have the tip for it I don't think.

3/4 with a hefty full sized trailer.

And Ive tried it....it doesnt cast well at all and is hard to maintain contact with lure. 6 power rods arent made for that presentation

The ones I'll be throwing won't be more than 1/2 oz. probably, I downsize compared to most guys when it comes to swim jigs, at least where I usually fish.
