Frog/Pitch Rod
Frog/Pitch Rod
Hey guys, I'm looking for a new rod to handle frog, pitching, and probably some small swimbait duties. Budget is $200 or less, length 7'2" - 7'6". The reel is going to be the SV103 XSL with 50lb braid. Been doing some research the last few weeks...Just looking for any feedback regarding balance/feel/sensitivity with this reel. A good warranty helps too!
I've narrowed it down to these 3 rods but will look into others too.
Shimano Zodias 72H
Dobyns Sierra 735C
Megabass Levante F7-72C Perfect Pitch
Thanks!

Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
haven't used the Dobyns but the Zodias 72H is definitely lighter and more sensitive than the Levante. I actually prefer the Zodias 75H frogging and pitch/flip.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
I have that Zodias. It does frogging, pitching, and some small swimbaits well. I have a Zillion on mine usually and I'm not crazy about how it matches with the Ci4+ seat. However it's pretty sensitive considering the price point, so I sort of dealt with it.

I must have overlooked the 75H when I was going through the lineup. How does it load and cast around 1/2oz frogs?cndbasshunter wrote:haven't used the Dobyns but the Zodias 72H is definitely lighter and more sensitive than the Levante. I actually prefer the Zodias 75H frogging and pitch/flip.

Frogging and Pitching 1/2oz jigs into pads, exactly what I bought the XXPP for. I actually had it last year and sold it but realize I this rod was made for these two techniques. So I bought another one last week. For a Heavy power rod it balances amazing for a Megabass.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
I really like my 735 champion for this application, however I don't know how the Sierra line compares to it.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
Don't know how available they are now, but I really like my Lucky Craft H XF 7'6" rod. It's the carolina rig edition but works great for frogs. It's a broomstick.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
Recently I picked up a Powell 775 3D shipped to my home new for $115. I've owned the 795 Powell 3D since last December. At full retail, this rod is a great value. Both rods are just under 5oz and the balance is outstanding. The 775 is marked extra fast but the action is almost the same as my NRX 894 which is a fast action rod.
I can tell already the 775 is an amazing rod for buzzbaits, frogs, pitching and jigs. I'd have no issue fishing a swimbait on it but the 795's slower action would be a little better.

Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
Nothing wrong with all of the rods your looking at. I would take a look at IROD's Fred's Magic Stick. It's a 7'5" Heavy Power with a great tip for walking and tons of back bone.

I have the Perfect Pitch and bought it for Flip/Pitch but it is now almost exclusively my frogging rod. Love this rod.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
I have the xx a Mart flipper and was wandering about the pp for the frogs. I love the tip on my 735 dobyns for walking frogs. If u have ever fished a 735 how's does the tip of the pp compare to it. I assume it is stiffer because it is the same as the a Mart except the length. Just seems like the 735 walks them with ease. Wandering if the pp does too.BassFisher83 wrote:I have the Perfect Pitch and bought it for Flip/Pitch but it is now almost exclusively my frogging rod. Love this rod.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
One thing I would say would be figure out what action you want first, since your using both techniques. Some guys prefer Mod Fast. Others Fast, Others Extra Fast. Depending on how you frog you might have to make some compromises on the action you want for flipping or vice versa.
Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
Thanks for the responses. I think I will go with the Zodias 75H. I've handled the Zodias 610ML and it is a quality rod, I don't doubt that the 75H will disappoint. Locating one is kind of tough, as I believe the 75H was just released at this year's classic.

Re: Frog/Pitch Rod
Unfortunately, I haven't used a single Dobyns rod before. I bought it for its 'intended' use like I said but it nearly always has a frog on it. I read or heard someone use it for frogs and after one use its all I use it for. I thought it would just be to stiff but that isn't the case. To me, the tip is fast and not extra fast. I have no problem walking the dog. Plenty of power to wrestle a 9-10lb snakehead out of some thick grass.Dustys60 wrote:I have the xx a Mart flipper and was wandering about the pp for the frogs.
