Best rods under $50?
I have a couple President spinning reels I am looking to put on some cheap rods to use as guest poles, but I don't want to spend much money on the rods. What is your favorite rod under $50? I know Ugly Stiks are a good choice, but what else is out there that would be durable for people who don't normally fish? Needing something that comes in like a 6' UL and a 6'6" or 7' M.
My go to...
Shimano Antares 12 / 7' St Croix Legend Tournament Bass / Xcalibur XKR50 chrome/black

Berkley Lightning Rods are a good value for about $30.

Look around for deals on more expensive discontinued or sale rods. Abu Veritas for instance can sometimes be had around 50. Could look at classifieds on sites as well to see if there is a better used rod. Otherwise not sure about normally priced $50 rods, dont use them or look at them at all.

Okuma Celilo is a great rod under $50. Check out Fishusa, they carry them. I've had a few of their rods for visitors, and they have been reliable, durable, and great performers.
Get your kids hooked on fishing, and they'll never have any money for drugs or alcohol.

I had an Okuma swimbait rod and it was actually a really nice rod, especially for how much it cost.

Not quite under $50, but the Shimano Convergence is good bang for the buck... all graphite, Fuji O-Ring guides. $59 retail.

Don't waste your money. Look at $70 to $100. Ton of good rods.

The Lightning and Lightning Shock rods are not a waste of money. More expensive rods should only be as good for the money. Check out ww2farmer's posts about the Shocks on bassresource. He can afford more expensive, but loves how the Shocks perform so owns several. I've got a Lightning that is over 40 years old, has caught tons of fish and is still going strong. These rods are excellent values for visiting friends to use. Heck, OP, you might even find yourself using one on occasion.

If you need to buy online, the shipping costs may be substantial.
I believe TW will ship free if it's over $50.
I also suggest combing through Craig's List and maybe even some yard sales.

Kuying Top Caster is a great under $50 ML option. Shipping will push you over $50 and take a few weeks. I'm looking to pick up a casting ML for myself soon as a kayak rig. The Kuying rods have great built quality, great components, good tapers and are very affordable. I'm using a 5'6'' M powered HD Cherrywood right now on the kayak and while it is cheap at under $30, it is built like crap out of crap components. Guides use chrome inserts are poorly aligned and despite it's M power rating the rod has little to no backbone.

Guys I think you are missing the whole point. Reread the OP. He wants guest rods for people that do not normally fish. These people would probably not know a good rod from a dust mop. All they need is something serviceable. If they are experienced fisherman they will be bringing their own stuff. Half of these people will be doing things with the rods that none of use would. My advice is the same as I give to grandparents wanting a rod for a 7 year old grand child. Do not buy what you would want to use. It is going to end up in the mud, possibly in the lake, they are going to walk on it and use it as a weed whip. If you are worried about what it costs you could ruin the trip for them.
Go cheap or go home.

Yep, there's a reason charter captains around here use cheap gear even though they can get nice gear for cheap/free....it's amazing the things people do with a fishing rod when they don't have a clue. Those Lightning rods should work well for this purpose.timinmo wrote:Guys I think you are missing the whole point. Reread the OP. He wants guest rods for people that do not normally fish.
