Jerkbait Trout Rod

Post by Isaiah20 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:34 am

I am looking for a casting rod that is short enough to efficiently cast and fish 1/4 oz jerkbaits while wading for trout. Does anyone have a good idea? I have a Daiwa Wisestream 62LB-3. Great for 1/8 oz jerkbaits but the bigger jerkbaits overpower the rod.

Fenwick KTF GWT-60CLJ fits the bill, Currently testing it but fells a little over powered for me 5.5-6g lure. Was wondering how the Daiwa Wise Stream feels.

I really like it. SS Air is riding on it. I bought it for the bigger jerkbaits. I just don't like it for the size of jerkbaits that I bought it for. For the smaller jerkbaits in the 1/8 oz range it is great. I also really like fishing 1/16 oz jig heads and 3 inch minnows. Midwest finesse rigs for smallmouth on it as well. I have not caught anything real big on it yet.

The Major Craft Benkei BF Rods have very good backbone but might be a little long for you.

Surprisingly, the Megabass Orochi XX Ronin. A little stouter than I'd like, but the tip/action is perfect for this application. 6'8", great handle (not too long for jerkbaits).

I really like the WiseStream 62 - mine has taken several trout in the 6 lb category, which it handles beautifully. I mostly use it with size 2-3 mepps aglia or similar inline spinner (4-7 gram).

I knew that you had used the rod to catch some good sized fish. I think that rod is perfectly fine with spinners in that size range. I tend to stay away from fishing spinners, the fish of the Driftless see a lot of spinners. I know many people who strictly fish them. I'm more apt to fish different lures, just my style. The rod in my opinion does not like 7g range jerkbaits. Have you tried jerkbaits on it?

Not jerkbaits, no. I have thrown some spoons 2-6 gram and a few minnows approx. 5 gram. All good.

Perhaps the G Loomis CR721 could fit your bill. I have only used it a few times for trout, since it is a little too much and fast-ish action when I throw 1/8 oz lures, but I could see it do very well with 1/4 oz jerkbaits.

Or the St. Croix Legend Elite Gulf Coast if you can find one.
