thinking of a new bottom contact rod
thinking of a new bottom contact rod
I'm thinking of a bottom contact rod for 1/2 to 3/4 oz wobble head jigs with trailer like the structure bug, menace etc. I do not fish much heavy cover and do not do any flipping. I am presently using a Conquest 904 and a Kistler Z-Bone 7-3 Heavy in the older model and both of them work well for what I am using them. Are there better choices out there for sensitivity etc.? I'm thinking Megabass Valdevia or Steez AGS 7-6 heavy. Your thoughts? Am I crazy for wanting something different?
Re: thinking of a new bottom contact rod
You have two really good rods! The NRX 894 would be another choice. Good luck in your search!
Re: thinking of a new bottom contact rod
You’re not crazy for wanting more rods, in true TT fashion. But you’re going to be really limited on rods that are going to be any noticeable improvement over a Conquest 904.
My opinion is that for USA-market rods it’s probably at or near the top. If variety is the spice of life, by all means get some NRX or whatever else.
For JDM rods you’d need to be looking at Steez Racing Design, Evergreen Kaleido, Luxxe Oltre, Poison Ultima (arguably very similar blank-material to your Conquest), etc.
Enjoy the hunt.

It will be very hard to beat that Conquest 904. I had the Valdivia. It isn’t nearly the stick the 904 is. The FMJ is the jewel in the Destroyer lineup but it’s not quite enough for the weights you want. I also prefer the 904 to the NRX894.

Re: thinking of a new bottom contact rod
I'm running the exact same weight wobble heads for big smallies up north for about 5 years, I found I lost more fish with the heavy action ZBone and have gone to the 4 power 7'6" ZBone as well as the 7'3". I have caught several over 6 pounds with both those rods.

I've owned both the 904 and Valdivia. I still have the 904 and love it. The Valdivia was nice, but was not impressed with it as a jig or texas rig rod. It excelled as a carolina rig rod in my opinion, but I wanted something that could do that as well throw a t-rig and jig and feel the 904 does all of those things well.

Re: thinking of a new bottom contact rod
The Steez AGS 76H is a fantastic bottom contact rod, shallow to deep. Its a great heavier cover pitching rod and makes an excellent deep water big jig/plastic/football jig type rod as well. I prefer it to the Valdiva or Conquest 904 specifically for bottom contact presentations.
