Loomis NRX 872S - 7'3" M (XFAST action) spinning rod

Post by Dragonstop852 » Sun Jan 12, 2020 5:22 am

Was looking to acquire my first NRX rod to experience the sensitivity promised for the type of fishing I already enjoy doing, but not sure whether its an appropriate choice. I drag a 1/4 oz. mojo rig around most of the year on hard bottom and in weed and thru weed edges. (thats why I like the somewhat longer rod - picks up line on longer sweeps of dragging....) Once the weeds emerge I can do a lot of weed fishing with this rig and other t-rigs before the weed gets too dense to drag horizontally - then I switch to heavier casting equipment and pitch. Does anyone have hands on experience as to whether the 872S would be a good choice for dragging duty in & around the weeds as well as hard bottom, excluding the "pitching" duty? I know Loomis generally has softer tip action and with the XFast just not sure if its too whimpy for what I'd like it to do? Or am I better off finding a quality rod in the MH action, with or without the EXFAST action? Any guidance would be much appreciated!

I just purchased a 872S but have not hit the water with it yet. Just from handling it I can tell you its not whippy. Very similar to the 852S with a little extra length. Its has some nice backbone. Its still rated for just 3/8 oz. but sure seems like it could handle more. Good tube rod!

I have one and love it. I use it for Senkos, tubes and Ned rigs. It would work well for you as would the NRX 852s

This is the finest deep dragging bottom contact rod Loomis makes. This is my go to tube rod on great lakes for its perfect actions for working bottom baits and the sensitivty and hook setting power in deepest water.

Agreed Goby. If one fishes smallmouth it’s a staple.

This is my favorite spinning rod. I have used it for many applications including dragging and hopping small jigs across rocks. The extra length also helps to work the jig free when it gets hung up. I have fished moderate weeds and weed lines and while the tip is soft I feel like the power is very good for a medium spinning rod. I have landed many big smallmouth (6+ lbs) in the great lakes and even a couple 40+" muskies, although they were not my targets :). I like to use light line in clear waters so I'm more concerned with my line/drag holding up than I am about the power of the 872s. With that said I don't think it would be ideal in around heavy cover. Good luck.
