Nrx or Megabass for lighter stuff??

Post by shimanogloomis man » Wed Jan 29, 2020 3:31 am

Im looking mainly at the nrx 801or 802 I’ll be throwing weightless trickworks, Keitech spiders with small jig head up to 1/4 at most and 4” senkos . Mostly throwing around docks and some open water , you guys think the 801 or 802 nrx will fit the bill or I also like Megabass rods as well , FYI I could get the nrx for 30% off retail price so for around 350 or maybe a Megabass would be better ? I also would like a rod und 7 foot easier to skip for me on the boat
Shimano and Gloomis just kick @ss, 17 Phoenix 919 225 Merc 225

Lol @ BassFisher83's reply.

So, I have an NRX 822 DSR and a Megabass Orochi Shakyhead as my main finesse rods. And while you would think that I'd go with the NRX 90% of the time, things are actually pretty evenly split. I dropshot on the NRX almost exclusively, but when it comes to tubes, Ned rigs and finesse jigs (and shakyheads, of course), I reach for the Orochi more often. 5 inch weightless and neko senkos, as well. I don't have a specific reason for that choice other than that the Megabass feels sturdier (I don't think it really is, it's just a feeling), and that it still has plenty of sensitivity. It's longer, too, which helps with casting distance from shore.

Just a reference point. If you can get the NRX for $350 I'd say go for that, an Orochi will cost you $300 as well (a Destroyer would be even more expensive), so that feels like a wash. And with the NRX you won't have that nagging feeling whether you're missing out on ultimate sensitivity or not.

P.S.: If you're looking for even more versatility, I find the Orochi Shakyhead to be a killer rod for Dark Sleepers all the way to 1oz (they don't feel or fish that heavy). Wouldn't jig those guys on an NRX. I've also caught a 6lbs largemouth on a jerkbait on that Megabass rod and it performed really well (it was the only rod I had with me and baitfish started spraying, so I figured "why not tie on a Pointer?"). Again not something I would ever have considered on the NRX.

I use both the NRX 822 DSR and the Destroyer Addermine. I like both of them. I feel like the NRX with a 2500 CI4 Stradic balances very well and feels lighter than the Addermine with the same reel. The more I use the NRX, the more I like it. In fact I picked up a 902 NRX recently as well. The Addermine in my opinion is more versatile than the NRX. I throw 110's, Neds, drops hot, shakey head and even throw lighter 1/16 ounce crappie tubes on it.

I have had both rods at one point. I felt like the Addermine is more comfortable to fish, but the NRX is much more sensitive in my hands. The rods have different actions.

I paired my 822 DSR with an Abu MGX 2000s (6.2oz) and the Orochi Shakyhead with a Shimano 2500 Ci4 Stradic (6.7oz). Both balance right past the cork (if i put my finger under the blank right after the cork ends), with the Orochi feeling a bit more tip-heavy. Both rods feel balanced if I hold it with three fingers in front of the reel mount and only one behind (which I generally do for finesse rods, instead of 2 fingers in front and two behind). If you prefer to hold with 2/2 fingers you'll want heavier reels for balance.

I feel like the 822 DSR is very balanced and super sensitive.

Works for me. Doesn't feel as airy an NRX for instance, but it's still light and comfortable to use. It retains that Aaron Martens-inspired tapered grip (I remember an announcement video for the original Orochis where he said he used to file down the cork himself but now he didn't have to). Kinda repeating myself from that earlier post: need to hold it with three fingers in front of the reel seat and only one behind to make this balance point work - something that I've started doing automatically because the tapered grip encourages it. A slightly heavier reel than the Ci4+ should still work for a conventional grip. (That's the 2500 at 6.7oz.)
