Rod suggestions
Recently got a Steez CT Sv and needing help selecting a ML rod for it. Want to use it for bottom contact such as jigs and light Texas rigs, wacky Senko’s as well as maybe some all around use. Currently I have a Levante f3-67lv with a type r and was wanting something a little more sensitive and nicer to pair up with the Steez. Looking into a Dobyns 702c, GLX 802c, a Black Themis or something else from Megabass. Can someone tell me how the Dobyns stacks up to a 3 power Megabass and if the GLX is strictly max of 3/8 and if it’s really a medium or more of a medium light.
Re: Rod suggestions
So just to clarify- were you asking about the champion 702c or the extreme 702c hp?
In my hands the champion will be closer to a medium and the extreme hp version
Closer to ML. I believe the hp 702c was originally designed as a finesse special rod
And does feel more so than the champion 702c iteration.
I can’t compare the rods to Megabass 3 power, but neither dobyns will match the glx in
Sensitivity, or power- but are both well balanced rods (strangely enough, I think the
Cheaper champion was the rod I liked better). And this is coming from a dobyns homer.
A rod that falls between light and medium light that you may want to look at is the
Phenix k1 713c, stock or custom. More sensitive than glx, has the aesthetics to match the ct
Sv, but will feel about a power short of the glx- not a people mover- and I get into trouble around
Cover. But for 4 inch/5inch wacky senkos on 5lb test its my go to. Will pay to play as well- but you
purchased a ct sv- so price may not be a barrier.

Re: Rod suggestions
I was indeed referring to the xtreme hp. Thank you for the feedback. I have looked at some of the Phoenix rods and do like the looks for the most part but can’t do those reel seats that are split. Probably my biggest reason for not even looking at an NRX, not to mention not a fan of the guides. Really like the looks of The GLX but don’t want to get too powerful of a rod.
Re: Rod suggestions
I have a 2 power Z-Bone that does all that stuff quite well. Very sensitive as well.
Re: Rod suggestions
Don’t know if glx 802c fishes similar to the glx 852c- which I have, cuz both have same rod specs save length. The 852c is sneaky powerful with the extra fast action and is closer to medium than medium light. I’ve also heard that the glx 842 feels stiffer than the nrx version but can’t confirm. In my opinion glx 852c can fish heavier than 3/8 comfortably, but over 1/2 wouldn’t be its wheelhouse.
Hear you on the open blank reel seat as I know some folks just hate it. You can custom wrap a k2 713c, but get the reservations on why you wouldn’t want to (horrible resale value, wait times , unpredictable results from some builders).
Others to consider w/o handle you hate-
dobyns 742c- my all time favorite dobyns rod, but I prefer the gen2 extreme model over the newer hp 742c because of the lighter power. Listed as medium but the old version is soft enough to fish medium light applications. Heard others like the hp okay but didn’t do it for me. Generic concerns of dobyns average at best sensitivity apply for both models but still a great rod.
Shimano Expride 72 ml+ is a newer rod, i haven’t fished it much- maybe 6-7 fish tops. Initial impressions- Doesn’t balance like 742c but definitely more sensitive. Nice soft tip but sneaky strong. Was able to fish 6lb tatsu w/o breaking off like I would with my glx 852c due to stiffness.
Sorry if this is confusing.

Re: Rod suggestions
Was just reading up on the latest x-ray blank version of this rod yesterday, and thought this might be a great candidate for what FinesseAngler is looking for: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewkistlerzb3lmh73.html
The rod is intriguing to me because it seems to be a 2+ power, somewhere between a 2 and a 3 (if mapped into the GLX power range). Does that seem right in practice? On top of regular finesse, would you consider fishing this near heavy vegetation (let's say with a 15lbs leader), or is it too light for that?
Edit: Looks like I might have mixed up the rods, the review is for the ZB3LMH73, a 3-power "lite medium heavy"...

Take a look at the GLX 842, that rod shines in my hands.
The balance is excellent, its super sensitive and light.
Love it.

Re: Rod suggestions
I will def be getting one of these at some point.
Re: Rod suggestions
I have the older generation of the blank. The 2 power is 1/8-1/2, the 3 power is 3/16-3/4, the 2 power is a medium, the 3 is as you said a lite-medium heavy. It's great for 4in senkos and flukes, small square bills.Drakestar wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 9:01 amWas just reading up on the latest x-ray blank version of this rod yesterday, and thought this might be a great candidate for what FinesseAngler is looking for: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewkistlerzb3lmh73.html

Re: Rod suggestions
Was looking into the Z Bone, good looking rod. Spec’d out a custom build to get the length in a 2 power I like, kinda wish for that money the locking nut was nicer but maybe not a deal breaker. Do the GLX 802 and 842 fish the same? I prefer a somewhat shorter rod. Also are the Z Bones a true fast taper?
Re: Rod suggestions
Thanks! I think I might actually get the 2-power for baitcasting tubes, neds etc. Too bad they don’t have that blank in a 7’3”...
Re: Rod suggestions
The 2 power I have is the older blank, it fishes like a moderate fast-fast, if that makes any sense.Finesse Angler wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 7:36 pmWas looking into the Z Bone, good looking rod. I don't know how the latest blank fishes, the new nfc blank may have a bit more power.
