Nrx 852c leader knot

Post by Pavlos12 » Fri May 08, 2020 6:23 am

Just purchased my first nrx I am curious if leader knots are going to damage these micro guides I def notice the knot going through the guides more on this rod than I do with my st croix rods and others I have no issue running straight tatsu or invisix but braid to flouro is ideal . Any feed back is appreciated

Depending on your line size an Alberto may be fine, but a FG knot is slimmer and will work better. I usually tie on a 12-15 foot leader which lasts me a few outings before I need to retie a new one on. The knot is a pain in the butt to tie, so this saves some hassle.

I’ve been trying the improved Albright knot it’s very small I tried the fg as well both are still noticeable going through guides which has never bothered me but with a high dollar
Rod it concerns me haha

i used to be a uni uni guy until a friend convinced me that an alberto would be smaller and better. he was right. it definitely doesn't get caught on the guides as much and runs through a lot smoother

The FG knot definitely is slimmer than an Alberto and it really isn't that hard to tie once you've got it figured out. To run smoothly through the guides when reeling it in, you need a series of alternating half hitches to finish it.
Since I tie this knot, all my braid to leader trouble has disappeared...

20lb super slick v2 with 10lb FG knot is what I use and it works excellent.

Finish up the FG knot with one interlocking hitch around the leader (interlocking hitch = one hitch knot over the top, one underneath). Pull tight, clip the leader, add an 1-2 additional interlocking hitches on the braid to build a smooth ramp in front of the clipped off leader. Works well.

One thing to really keep on mind about the FG knot is that it's really slim when properly started. But when the initial wraps cross over it creates a thicker, bulbous starting section where multiple layers of braid are stacked up. Happens particularly with thin main line, so something to look out for (I still do it after a while of using this knot...)

Never had any issues going through micro guides when it's tied correctly, though.

I do one half hitch then tighten the FG knot, then I tie two more half hitch knots and trim the leader, I then add 3 more
half hitch knots.

I hope that makes sense LOL.

Love the FG knot....

If you want an even neater FG knot, look at a Rizutto finish. Does add another level of complexity to an already frustrating knot.tho.

I use a RP knot, works pretty good. Anyone ever use super glue on it after it's tied?

I can tie an FG reasonably well in my living room... sometimes lol. Out on the water - no chance. I am just a ham fisted fool. I really don't use spinning enough/tie the knot enough - if I did it more often it might become easier. But basically I will tie it at home prior and if I have have to retie it on the water I go with something else, usually one of the Albright variants. Typically going from 15lb braid to 7 or 8lb fluoro. You can hear/feel it going through the 852 recoils, but it's not bad really.

I have been using braid to a fluoro leader (Seaguar Premier Leader) almost exclusively for years. After extensive "investigation" and experimentation, I use an improved Albright knot for the connection. It is small, when tied correctly, almost no line strength loss and I have been able to tie it in the wind consistently.

(http://leadertec.com/tipsandtechniques/ ... albrt.html)

Years of use with that knot and NRX, now CNX rods, and other high-end rods with micro guides have resulted in no problems at all. In most cases, the knot passing thru the guides is not noticeable.

Regards,
Doc

Same here. SS V2 is a great line. The FG will be the slimmest knot you can tie.

Never had an issue with an Albright through those guides. Hate the guides though, and swap them out when I can.
