Best Rod for Poppers and Prop Baits

Post by edge13 » Thu Jun 11, 2020 1:23 pm

I'm partial to G-Loomis and Shimano rods but curious what others are using for poppers and smaller prop baits. I fish mainly casting rods. I'm pairing mine with Curado DC reels but open to suggestions. Favorite mono and pound test for this set-up?

I use a 842c GLX with a Steez CT 8.1 spooled with 20 lb braid and a 12 lb mono leader. Works great for Ricos.

If you're interested in a sleeper pick: Powell Endurance 725CB. Graphite crankbait rod, perfect for topwaters: light, not glass-noodley at all, fast and crisp tip, but parabolic action. Pops and walks Ricos/spooks super well, cranks ploppers great, and I'm never worried about trebles coming out. It's my go-to topwater rod even though I have much higher rod fare (GLXs etc.) in my lineup.

I fish mine with a Abu Revo AL-F (when only doing topwater) or a Pflueger Patriarch XT (when also cranking on it). 5.7 and 5.8oz, the entire combo is 10.7oz on my scale. Ever to slightly tip-heavy, as I want for a walk-the-dog combo.

20 or 30lbs braid to a 12-14lbs mono leader.

For smaller topwaters, I have found my Phenix Maxim 6-10 ML to be a winner. For the price, you cant beat those rods regarding features or performance. Sensitivity is way above its price point.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

You could probably do the Poison Adrena 7'2 Medium. I don't own this model so can't comment specifically. I have the 6'11 M+ and I love the rod but it's better suited for light plastics - just a hair too fast for treble hooks.

I just picked up a MB Destroyer Otomat and got to fish the rod yesterday. I absolutely love it. Handles poppers and walkers great, and I was blown away by how much it improved my casting accuracy. I had a better fish run and pull some drag at the boat and it absorbed the fight perfectly to keep the trebles pinned.

Loomis 842 in any rod line is a great Topwater rod. Also use it for a lot of other things when the Topwater bite is off.

Depends on how heavy of popper and prop baits your talking. Most of the stuff i do is half ounce and up so, 14#mono 7MH st.croix LE. If under half ounce you might want a M power rod and lighter line.

MB X7 Super Elseil is the best 1/4 oz. pop r rod I have ever used. Cast well, works the bait well, and has plenty of power to land fish.

I use Shimano for these applications as well. I target smallies on Lake Michigan, where I use these tactics quite often. I use the Shimano Zodias casting rod 6'10" Medium Light. This rod is great for small poppers. The tip action let's you walk the dog with ease. I get away with catching big smallies because I fish open water areas with little obstructions. The 6'10 ml has a perfect action and can handle big aggresive smallies. If I need more power to move fish I go with the 6'10" medium Zodias.

I pair it with a Shimano Aldebaran and spool it up with 30 pound braided line!

astonishing, astounding, blindsiding, dumbfounding (also dumfounding), eye-opening, flabbergasting, jarring, jaw-dropping, jolting, shocking, startling, stunning, stupefying, surprising

But I think amazing is the better choice of words.
I use mine for pop max, square bills and anything I want to topwater walk spit pop chug prop.
I have heard of people use it for vision 110 and other jerkbaits but I have not used it much for those things.

It’s pretty good especially if you just want to bring one rod for a variety of reaction baits.
