Sealing the cork
Re: Sealing the cork
Well, I threw my concerns out the door after reading all new replies in this thread and sealed the cork on all of my rods (after testing it out on one of the cheaper ones first). Seems okay - the cork feel hasn't really changed much. The cork looks a bit darker/more saturated, but not bad.

Sounds like you got it
Re: Sealing the cork
U-40 treatment is applied to all my rods with cork prior to initial use.
I second (third, fourth... ) all the positive comments. In some cases, the slight "darkening" of the cork is minimal, but in all cases, not significant. Tactile sensation does not seem any different to me, untreated or treated. And clean-up is a breeze.

Re: Sealing the cork
As soon as I figure out what I did or my wife did with the jar of u40 I'm going to seal some of my cork handles, any recommendations on what I should clean the cork with before the u40, all of these rods have a couple years of use on them.

Also, a 320 grit sanding sponge will make cork look new, but gotta be light-handed with it.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I use 320 grit sand paper (or higher) if I have used cork and have to fill pits and clean up the cork. Elmer’s Pro Bond in Golden Oak has been a good filler for me.

Thanks y'all, I've used the golden oak as filler for damaged cork so I think I still have some left.
