I’m thinking about picking up one of the new ones myself. I have a 844 and 843 mbr always wanted to try a 783 but can’t win an eBay auction on one. The older rods in good condition go for more than original retail. The new rods have longer handles I would be target casting spinner chatter and swim jigs thanks

The new 783c is a great rod but the longer handle does bug me, I used mine as an all-around bank fishing rod and would gladly trade 2" off the handle for 2" more usable blank. IMHO it's an amazing rod for 1/4" jigs, chatterbait, and spinnerbaits.

Thanks houndfish the jigs 1/4 -3/8 ounce jigs would be in the mix as well. I should have bought 783c back a few years ago. I do have a new 894FPR GLX and like the reel seat and longer handle for pitching up to an ounce. The rod seems super sensitive but I have only fished close range with braid.

I fish 3/8oz Kietech jigs on mine when fishing a lead-ban lake and with a bulky trailer the 783c starts feeling a little overpowered, but the casting/hooksetting not really affected. I find the 783c to be a very honest rod when it comes to the rating, it will load a true 1/4oz (weightless Trickworm) well enough, but it's clearly the lower end. It will cast a 3/4oz (3/8 jig w/ trailer) but starts to feel a little overloaded. With in the 1/4-3/4oz range it will do most anything you want it to do. The longer handle is the only thing that keeps it from being great at flukes or anything I want to work tip-down.

Copy thanks again for the extra info on the 783 new model. The handle length of the classic glx mbr rods is definitely what I’m used to. The older loomis crankbait rods have to short of a handle. My glx 844 and 843 older models are just right. My favorite casting rod is actually the 812SBR GLoomis which is why I want to try the 783glx if the 812SBR could be more sensitive for bottom contact you would have a very versatile casting rod there

old glx graphite are competitive with today's best. The bcr 803 glx was and is as sensitive a rod I've fished with FC line. The 843 remains in my rotation to this day.

My Classic GLX 844 is one of the favorites and sensitivity is right up to today's standarts imho ( I own NRX as well ).
Even my classic IMX 843 still in use with no signs of slowing down

i still use my glx bcr 803 all the time. mostly 1/4 jigs and plastic. im in the minority for sure but i love the recoil guides.
the glx mbr 783 is used sometimes, mostly roll casting spinnerbaits to timber.
i throw small paddletails on swimbait jigheads on the 842 occasionally.
the others get let use but i cant seem to sell them. my other rods are megabass, nrx and a few legends.

I only fished the old IMX back in the day and it was fantastic.

I do however love my newer GLX 842 and love the reel seat but have heard others say they don't like it, to me its
more comfortable then any of my NRX rods but I do like the NRX blank a bit more.

What are the distinguishing features of the various generations of GLX rods? The latest ones I purchased have dark colored cork rings in the handles and are trimmed with blue thread work in the butt cap. I have some that don't feature this. I think all mine fall under the Classic umbrella of rods:

782 (casting and spinning)
783 (casting and spinning)
842
843
844

a 2000 ish to 2011 era GLX MBR would have had a relatively ugly black but cap on the back of the rear grip.

your ex, huh? that's odd because you were afraid about the sex change it was going to undergo as I was originally planning to make it into a spinning rod. I think we agreed it was a Bruce > Caitlin change and not the other way around.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

i also have the glx 844s that i bought once for "light tackle" fishing on the chesapeake bay for bluefish and rockfish and to use for cat fishing. i think i only used it once but that's the only rod i'd sell from the old glx's. not that its a bad rod, i just dont really need a 4 power glx spinning rod. if it were a bit longer...

surprisingly, the old glx BC sticks with the ugly baitcasting reel seat feels super comfortable to me as i always have all fingers north of the trigger.

i think ive only used the 782 once. maybe i should try walking a baby pop x.... this rod is significantly lighter in power than the 842.

I’m old but new school. I’ve had GLX’s since their inception and love the newest versions the best. They’re lighter, better balanced and I feel more sensitive. I fished my 2000 (approximate year) GLX alongside my 2016 GLX and the old one felt like a dinosaur. Too many old guys put relevance and reverence into things from the “good ole days” but! They’re the ones that pay big money for all my old Shimano’s and Loomis rods, so I still love ya all

I finally called G. Loomis yesterday to expedite the Glx 844 mbr that I have been fishing jigs on since 2002. The reel seat nut is loose now and the reel jumps loose on good hook sets. I have to say I’m a little worried about the new rod being different. I hope that I like it better. I do really like my current version 894 FPR a lot. I will do some weights handle action comparison before putting the old dog to sleep. The guy from loomis said early October should ship
