top water rod for 1 oz +/- baits

Post by johns » Tue Jan 05, 2021 2:58 pm

Looking for a rod for 1 oz topwater baits (buzzjets, i-louds, i-jack, whopper ploppers, etc.). I mostly fish large shallow flats at night so I need to bomb it out there and be sensitive enough to feel the action of the lure and any weeds that it may catch. The reel will be a zillion type-r spooled with 40 lb power pro super slick version 2. Was thinking of the legend glass 7' 11" H but didnt know if it would be sensitive enough. Any suggestions or opinions? thanks john

I was about to suggest the DESTROYER P5 F7-70X Tequila Baccarac, but it's only 7 feet long. 3/4 to 4oz, moderate taper. Haven't fished it myself yet (but @freelancer27 has). One of the intended applications are larger frogs and topwaters.

A lot of people talk very highly about the P5 Madbull
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible

you guys have expensive tastes  . I should have put in a price range which would be under 300.00. Right now I'm using a cumarra 7'11" mhxf which when I bought it I thought it was the reaction series. Over all a great rod but I think I need something a little more moderate. thanks again

A more wallet friendly option to maybe consider is the Dobyns Sierra 735 C. It is labeled as extra fast but is definitely a more moderate actioned rod with some bend to it. I have used it for 1oz hardbaits like the MB Kanata and Dorum and it casts and works those baits well in my opinion and don't have issues feeling whats going on (never catch anything though  ) If you check out the TW reviews a few comments are about the rod being used for treble baits as well. Not sure if it is too short for you though. Plus it is on sale right now.

Wouldn't go glass. I would go with a longer heavy medium fast graphite.

I used a Loomis 847CBR in E6X for full size spooks and was very pleased with the rod for that. Another suggestion if you need a longer rod is the Dobyns 794SB. That is a very interesting rod and should be capable of launching the lures a long distance.

I've been using a Falcon Expert "So Cal" rod for long cast throwing saltwater spooks and other topwaters.

It's 7'6" and has a moderate action. I use 50lb braid and you can feel if it gets messed up.

Dobyns Champion 705c or 735c. OR you could drop down to the Sierra line to save some money.
