senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
I fished the old Loomis BSR 852 Senko rod this week down in South Florida. Likely had not picked up a spinning rod in 6 years. Had situation where I was catching them on a spinning rod but not my normal baitcaster. Only difference in equipment was 20# braid on the spinning rod vs 40# braid on the baitcaster.
also reminded me how good that old loomis rod was for senko's. The butt of the rod is very similar in power to my 843 glx casting rod just the tip is far lighter in power. can't horse 2# fish into the boat with the spinning rod.
what do you fish Senko style 5 inch size on?

Most of the time, a Loomis BSR 852 Senko rod paired with a Team Daiwa Fuego A and 15lb braid.DavidSA wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 4:25 amI fished the old Loomis BSR 852 Senko rod this week down in South Florida. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible

NRX 893, OG Steez 103 with an SV spool, 12 lb Sniper.
Re: senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
Last time I fished a Senko, it was on my Megabass Destroyer F5-75X Javelin but I'm not sure if it was the 5 or 6 inch size.
Used to love pitching the 5 inch on the old Kistler Helium He69APC though... wow that takes me back

Re: senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
For both wacky and t-rig, I have settled on a old GLX 782mbr as my 5" senko rod. I had the huge stock guidetrain removed and replaced with Torzites/Recoils, it moved the balance back an inch or so and the tip feels a ton lighter. I throw them on a Alphas SV w/ 12lb Sniper. I only really fish senkos in open water, so I don't need much power. I use the same combo for nail-weighted 3.75" Fat Impacts, with two 1/32oz nails and a Owner light wire hook it weighs just under 3/8oz and makes a great option when I want to fish a little faster.

I have the fuego from about 10 years back. Mine is a very slow reel. I wondered if the actual lack of speed was a factor yesterday.ftl1951 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 5:20 amMost of the time, a Loomis BSR 852 Senko rod paired with a Team Daiwa Fuego A and 15lb braid.DavidSA wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 4:25 amI fished the old Loomis BSR 852 Senko rod this week down in South Florida. I don't ever fish a senko with a weight. Just never tried that.

852S as well.
Re: senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
I use a casting 6'9MHXF Helium3 (roughly a 3.5-4 power IMO) for both weightless and weighted 5" Senkos, though I very rarely use weights. I can throw and work them just fine on my 6'8LMHF Helium3 as well but the MH is just what I have rigged up for it most of the time.
As for line, I've used 40lb braid to 14lb Sniper, 10lb YZH, and 15lb Tatsu, since I use the rod for all sorts of stuff. The Tatsu was glued to it last season, but if I was specializing more, I'd probably use 12lb Assassin. 15lb is nice for peace of mind around docks and wood though.
And speaking of cover, I choose casting over spinning for pitching accuracy around cover which is the only area I'm throwing weightless Senkos in the first place.

Re: senko rod revisited: Spinning or Casting
I'm generally a casting rod guy when it comes to unweighted senkos, but I have been seriously contemplating purchasing a new dedicated spinning rig.
Most of my fishing is done off of my pier, and consists of longish to very long casts. These type of casts, as opposed to pitches, tend not to always play well in the sandbox with the soft senko...I can't count the number of times the plastic ripped off of the hook shortly after the cast, resulting in backlash city. I figure a spinning rig would help here a ton.
For those using the OG BSR 852, does anyone know if its characteristics are identical (or at least very similar) to the new GLX 852? Anyone using the 892/3 S for senkos?

I have four of these Daiwa’s. Two 1000, one 2000, and one 3000 reels. Whatever Daiwa did when they produced these is amazing. They are absolutely liquid smooth and I still use them all today. Only had to replace the cap opposite the handle on the 3000 series. That’s the one I have on my Loomis BSR852 GLX. I do have several new reels from Daiwa and Shimano that I use for freshwater, but these are still incredibly good and have performed flawlessly.DavidSA wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 9:24 amI have the fuego from about 10 years back. BTW, I bought all of them from Tackle Warehouse back in the day...

that is the model diawa I have as well. Got mine on clearance as well. Were they not something like $169. I've got a 1000 and a 2000 I think. smooth as silk.
