Anyone have any experience with the 714 casting rod? What techniques did you use it for and is it versatile?

I built a custom on that blank. The taper is really versatile. Anything from 1/4oz jigs to jerkbaits to cranks...it all works.

I originally built it for Texas Rigs but, it didn't have the muscle for it. Everything below that, it is fantastic.

I freakin LOVE it. Posted about it here a few weeks ago, in the “What’s your most versatile rod?” thread  viewtopic.php?f=46&t=85256&p=687200&hilit=714#p687200

That was a great read. I just got one and I a m blown away. I wanted to see if anyone else had that feeling. When i first handled it i thought no way a mh power then i took it out and couldn't believe the distance i was throwing a keitech 2.8 and 1/8 oz head paired with a curado 70 mgl then i tied on a 1/4 oz bitsy bug and twin tail grub and the tip was perfect to me for this plus it had more backbone than i thought it would. Only one trip out with it so far but i think i found my dream rod. Im gonna try the alde mgl and treble hook baits on it next trip out

I have a 7'1" medium light and love it. It throws small jerkbaits, 4" senos, tubes, and small swimbaits like a dream. I have a custom K2 MH 6'8" that mostly gets used for jerkbaits but will easily do lighter bottom contact. The K2 blank is just as sensitive as my NRX's, Zbone, and MB X7.

I’ve had one for several years. I love it for 1/8-1/4 Texas rigs in the deep, clear spotted bass reservoirs here in Northern California. I really haven’t used it for anything else. I use the 713 for bait finesse - ned rigs, light t-rigs.

For what it’s worth - My favorite k2 is the 736. Love using it for light-medium duty flipping here on the Cal Delta and clear lake.

How does the K2 blank compare to say a NRX?

I have the 713 ML, as well; it was my gateway drug into the 714 :) Also love it for small jerkbaits (Vision 110 Jr etc.), small Dark Sleepers, shakeyheads, Neds and dropshots. I don't find it as versatile because of how light it is - it doesn't have a ton of hooksetting power for bigger single-hook applications. Tried throwing weedless tubes on it (Owner Phantom hooks) and it just didn't feel like it could drive those hooks into the fish's mouths too well. Light-wire hooks single hooks are totally fine, though. I use the 714 for weedless tubes and bigger shakeyheads now.

I think it's right there. I dropshot a ton on a NRX 822 DSR as well as the K2 713, and don't find much of a difference sensitivity-wise.

I've fished it a few more times now and i feel its right there with my 802c and 893c but its less power than the 893
