Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
Fished a lake my buddy has been telling me to go to for a while and had the best shore fishing day of my life in both numbers and size. All but 1 fish caught on the pointer 78. Don't even know why I bought them but they've been in my box for a couple years and today was the first time I tied one on. Was fishing them on the NRX 822S SYR because I only own 2 spinning rods and the other is an inexpensive 13 fishing dropshot rod. The 822S SYR surprised me with how well it fishes 3 inch paddle tails, but I wasn't a huge fan of how it fished this jerkbait, though I've read that quite a few people like it. I felt like I really had to slap it to the side to give the bait the action that a more appropriate rod ought to be able to give it with a twitch. As much as I don't like spinning gear, I feel like this bait will fish better that way and it's absolutely going to become a part of my arsenal after today, so I'm exploring my options on rods to use it with.
Price matters a little but not much. If it makes fishing this and other baits a better experience, it's well worth it to me. USDM is a requirement because my bass stuff gets more wear and tear per session than my UL stuff, so some sort of warranty matters to me.

Shorter than seven feet in length?
Re: Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
Preferably in the 6'6" to 6'10" range

Megabass Orochi XX Shakyhead landed me a 6-pounder on a Pointer 78SP, so it has my vote. It’s 7 foot, though. Any of the Megabass F3.5 rod might do nicely.
Re: Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
IMX Pro 812s JBR works wonderfully for that.
Re: Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
610 ml expride works great for small jerks, cranks or anything small with trebles.
Re: Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
The 78 weighs 3/8. Just my opinion but a bit much for that stick under load. More than likely what’s being experienced with his SYR putting a dance on the offering and the 610ml is even softer. Just my opinion sir.

Following this thread.
I have a IMX 812 JBR (previous version not the IMX Pro) and I like it, but I feel like there should be something better out there. I have some other rods to test this year, maybe one of those will be a standout.
I rely primarily on baitcasters, but when the winds are really strong I like to go to spinning for light (=<3/8 oz) lures.

I use my Conquest 842c for all jerkbaits between 1/4-1/2oz. Throw the shallow Pointer 78 a lot. Sounds like NRX might be bringing back MBR models, so it might be worth the wait for a 782/3, if they make it.

Right, I was thinking 78 was 1/4, but it is 65.

Loomis 842S, expride M, helium M, or Megabass ronin all are great choices in my opinion for smaller/ medium jerkbaits.

FWIW, that Expride 6'10" ML is my spybait rod (they're 3/8oz typically) and it throws those very well. You don't need to jerk those, though. I'd want the 6'10" M even for a Pointer 78.
Re: Spinning rod for throwing LC Pointer 78?
i have not thrown this bait since at least 2015 and most likely 2014 as I fish Florida mostly now but
the bait in KY in March and April was so legit. I recommend you consider a loomis mbr 6'6 m baitcasting rod, 10# FC line and a baitcaster such as a mg50 in a new model. I find the 78 plenty heavy to throw on baitcaster and the motion does not wear me out.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I now have way too many rods that I want! The guy that hates spinning gear is looking seriously at numerous high end spinning sticks now
I've been so impressed by what my NRX 842c has been able to handle in the years I've had it. I wish there was like an 842.5c, but I really can't imagine a rod that I feel comfortable fishing so many things with as I do the 842. With that in mind, assuming we get an 842s/782s, they are pretty high up on my list of rods to get once people get them in their hands and share their thoughts. I never really thought I'd be in the market for a 78 inch bass rod but a recent trip to the east coast fishing with trees all around me and now fishing jerkbaits from shore has made me appreciate what a shorter rod could do for me. Until very recently, the vast majority of my shore fishing was for bay bass, which requires me in some spots to, above all else, just be able to cast beyond certain grass lines where the fish actually are, so any help a longer rod can give is great.JBcrankaddict wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 8:07 amI use my Conquest 842c for all jerkbaits between 1/4-1/2oz. There is, it's called the Phenix K2 714C (Well, it's an inch longer, but it has that feeling of a 2.5 Loomis power with versatile taper and amazing sensitivity.) That 714 is my "other jerkbait rod", btw - but it's casting and doesn't help the original poster.
