Non-Spinning Shad Rap #5/7 setup

Post by goldrod » Tue Apr 20, 2021 10:09 pm

Interested in knowing what your #5&7 Shad Rap casting setup is?
Call me crazy but I’m looking to achieve this and meet or exceed a spinning outfits distance. I’m thinking about 8lb floro
And I’m not talking on a windy day but average day. I’ve been looking at some rods and reels to that with handle this lure. I think the rod has to be 7 to 7’1”
Doesn’t matter who makes the rod or reel

Interesting that you mention this. This very thing has been a focuse for me this spring. Shad raps, flat sided cranks and balsa cranks all around 1/4 oz give or take. I have been very impressed with a Phenix Feather Light 7’1. It casts well, it loads well, it is more of moderate action. When a fish takes the bait they stay on as well. For a reel I have been using a Pixy with a Presso spool. But thinking either the Pixy68 or the Pixy Type R spool would be great and very similar as well. For line I am using 8# mono. I am very impressed with this setup and it has caught me about a dozen fish this spring using a shallow 1/4 oz Shad rap on a slow and steady retrieve.

I cast a #5 shad rap very well with a PX68 with an og Pixy spool, so I know that a #7 would absolutely bomb with any Pixy.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Weight of #7 Shad Rap is listed as 5/16 oz. so I don't see why there wouldn't be a ton of possible combos. #5 Shad Raps are 3/16 oz. I learned to cast them on 3 different combos. Old 7' ML HMG/TD-Z 105H, OG Expert 6'9" L/gold colored Carbonlite and 7' ML Crankin' Stick/with another gold Carbonlite. I consider the distance I get to be satisfactory. They ain't jigs. :big grin:

BTW, the Phenix Feather and new M1 have my attention for doing some lighter lure casting.

Honestly, a #7 can be cast on any M power cranking rod. A #5, I like to toss on my Legend X 6'8" MF and Aldebaran MG.
