Maribou and Ned rod

Post by aaatkr » Thu Feb 03, 2022 4:36 pm

Loking for a rod for these presentations. Narrowed down to three:
7'3" Ark Reinforcer, 7'2" Expride B and the new 13 Fishing Envy Black 3. Any thoughts. I'd like to know if any of these would have a soft enough tip section to fling lighter baits if I choose. Thanks for your help.

Might be helpful to specify how light the baits you choose could be.

Two different rods in my opinion not only for two very different techniques but given that weight range.

This and wet Maribou will be way way heavier than dry

Please educate me regarding the differences in the two rods and their best uses. I'm not being contrary, I just don't know. I thought I was on the right track, but I'm far from being accomplished in these techniques. Thanks again.

Yeah I’m familiar with marabou, buck tail, fox, ‘yote etc for a few decades and only fishing smallmouth. I was unsure if 1/16 was intended for a Ned head or marabou or 3/8 was marabou or Ned. In my hands a 1/16 oz (plus offering) Ned wouldn’t be something I would throw a 3/8 hair jig rod on.

The reason at least in my hands for two rods is that one is largely a bottom contact offering and the other up in the column with less resistance wafting “in space”.

I’ve fished a ton of rods over the years for those techniques and one rod never optimally covered both.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference in a rod designed for a Marabou jig (1/16) and a Ned rig rod (1/8)? Isn't there one rod that can do both well? i.e. 7'3" or 7'10" Victory, 7'2" Expride B or 7'3" Reinforcer? Thanks again.

A lot in my hands but I have been throwing each for years. What’s right for me may not be right for anyone else including yourself.

I would recommend throwing the baits and arriving at your conclusions.

If I had to venture a guess it is that you’ll end up with two rods for these techniques if you fish the techniques a lot.

Bottom or near contact vs an offering up in the column with little to any resistance are two different animals in my hands.

For what it’s worth I fish smallmouth on rivers a little bit.

Thanks, but telling me "in my hands" is kind of vague. You talking tip softness, length, etc..? Can you be a little more specific? I'm looking for one rod that can do both well, not the perfect rod for each presentation. Thanks again.

Take a look at the alpha angler 72finesse. I can’t comment on your original list

A few others I have experience with that would work. St croix ML in length and series you choose. 76mml daiwa once again pick your series and cost

Thanks Falcon. Not familiar with that rod, I'll take a look. I'm new to the Marabou thing and figured the longer rod the better. I've been using a 6' GL3, but don't get the distance I would like. I bank fish most of the time. I like the Expride but it's lure rating starts at 1/8. I suppose I could put a small chunk of TRD up on the shank to give me a little more casting distance. The Victory is nice, but I've heard the sensitivity isn't as good as the Expride or Ark Reinforcer. Thanks for your help
