Which MB P5 rod excels at 1/2 oz chatterbaits
Which MB P5 rod excels at 1/2 oz chatterbaits
I currently use a MB X4 Destruction for throwing 1/2 oz chatterbaits but it will wear my wrist out after a couple days of use. Which rod in the MB P5 line works well with chatterbaits? Are there any other high end rods that work well with chatterbaits that you recommend? I normally use 50 to 65 lb braid. I also use a 4.8 Keitech Fat Impact as a trailer so total weight is in the 3/4+ range.

Not a MB rod, I have been using a Dobyns Extasy 7-5 Mag Hvy. It had too much tip for bottom contact [mho] but it really worked well for chatterbaits, plenty of tip and a real good backbone. Been using a SV103 7.9 with 20 floro, also works really well with braid, you can feel everything.

I don't use braid, but I've used the Madbull for it with 15# fluoro. Can even handle 3/4s ounce jackhammers and the new big blade chatterbait.

How is the handle when your hands get wet? Does it get slippery?JCBHatesFishing wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:47 amI don't use braid, but I've used the Madbull for it with 15# fluoro. Can even handle 3/4s ounce jackhammers and the new big blade chatterbait.

I second the Mad Bull as a great chatterbait rod in the P5 line and I use 30# Power Pro Maxcuatro braid, and it handles everything up to the 3/4oz model Jackhammer with a Deps 5" Death Adder. I was wondering about the carbon fiber grip as well, but it's never been slippery even with some northern pike slime on your hands no matter how hard you try to get that stuff off. I now wish all my rods came in that carbon fiber handle material as there would be less issues with keeping handles clean like with EVA and having to seal cork, but you'll be happy with the Mad Bull for your stated purposes. I did try the big 1.25oz Jackhammer on the Mad Bull and it seemed just too much for the rod, so I just moved it over to my Valkyrie 71H and it's been great for that lure.

Consider dropping the P5 and move to the Valkaryie 71MH for a similar amount of $. Supposedly an amazing chatterbait stick and the star of the lineup. I have one but havent so much as tied a bait on yet. Bought it just out of recommendations and high praise. You also might want to the consider the 72H valkyrie too given the total weight you will be throwing. Gary can point you in the right direction between the two.
