NRX+ 901S SJR - What are you main uses for this rod? Comparisons to other rods.

Post by Junk Fisherman » Sun Aug 13, 2023 7:11 am

Hey guys.
I am treating myself to a high-end rod and I am leaning towards the 901 NRX+ as my #1 Ned rig rod. I only use a 1/16 and 3/32 Ned jigs which fits nicely in the 901 lure range. I prefer longer rods so I am not considering the 821 and the other rod I looked at was the 902 NRX+ but I already own two 761 Steez rods which it seems the 902 is comparable to.

So what are you using your 901 for? I keep reading hair jigs and finesse swimbaits which I would definitely end up throwing with this rod. Personally, I don't know why hairjigs are recommended but not the Neds. I consider the applications interchangeable. Another rod I have an interest in is the Flyssa. Does anyone have a comparison between the 901 and the Flyssa? How about the sensitivity and strength of the 901 NRX+ and the 761 Steez. Any information is appreciated.

Hey, the 901S is a nice rod but very whippy feel to it. I also have the 7-6 steez and to me this rod is more powerful than 901 and 902. The steez my favorite for versatility. My guess is you'd probably like the 902S as a power under the steez. I wasn't a fan of how light in power the 901 was. I'm sure its a blast to fight fish on though.

You hear about marabou jigs (fluff), small swim baits etc because they aren’t bottom contact baits being utilized with this rod. They are being retrieved up in the column. So look past overall weight of the aforementioned being similar. While the 901 and 821 are both one power, one is the SJR taper and the other JWR. The only thing they have in common is the “1” designation. The 821 has a shut off point that the 901 does not with its deeper parabolic bend. Personally I feel that the NRR will get plenty of distance with a 1/16 (plus whatever you’re putting on it) particularly with light braid.

I’ve got seven models of the NRX+ models and multiples of some, all I fish are smallmouth. While I adore both the 901 and 902 I wouldn’t “ned” with them. My friend Ned and I differ on what constitutes a “ned” rod and I realize everyone is different.

ps: You won’t read this much of anywhere but since you asked about what else the 901s is good for. If one enjoys the archaic practice of throwing small (1/8) inline spinners, little Shad raps or original rapalas the 901 excels at them.

Happy shopping sir.

I believe the 901 excels for hair jigs and spy baits. Like mentioned in another comment, baits that stay in the water column.

A few of my buddies have the 901 and it’s all they use it for: hair jigs and spy baits and sometimes 2-3” swimbaits, all with 5lb. braid.

Because of their feedback, I went with the legend elite 7’6” MLXF and the Steez 7’6”, because I already had the feider tatula elite 7’6” for hair.

What did you hope the Legend Elite rod would do or be that would differentiate it from the Tatula Elite? Have you had a chance to determine whether the Legend Elite fulfills your hopes? Are there things the Tatula Elite does better?

It looks like you have the regular original version of the Tatula Elite, and not the AGS guide original version--it that correct?

The Legend Elite 7’6” MLXF is my favourite rod for Ned rigs. I’ve thrown 1/16 to 1/8oz heads on it with different ned-style baits but my favourite and most consistent producer is a 1/8oz. with a maxscent Lil’ trooper. I can feel even the smallest touches and I love how crisp the hook sets are. I find the rod is perfect for finesse-style presentations like ned rigs, hair jigs and small bucktail jigs, 2.5-2.75” tubes with 1/8oz. heads, drop-shot rigs (1/8oz.) and small swimbaits on 1/8oz. heads. I find this rod is just perfect with 1/8oz. weights. I have this rod paired with an Exsence 3000 and 10lb. braid and a fluoro leader.

I have the Tatula Elite with the AGS guides. I’ve primarily fished it with 1/16oz. hair jigs that I tie on the half-moon heads I use for Ned rigs. I’ve thrown as heavy as 1/8oz. hair jig to as light as 1/32oz. hair jigs (tipped with a little chunk of plastic) on it and no problems getting it out to where I needed it. I’ve used this rod for ned rigs too but the rod is definitely softer than the legend elite. I think this rod would be good with spy baits too but haven’t tried it yet. Primarily fished with 10lb. braid with fluoro leader but fished it with 10lb. fluoro my last couple outings (the benefit of having an old reel with two spools). Great rod overall. Not as crisp feeling as the Legend Elite and not as sensitive but very very very nice to fish still. I have this rod paired with a Certate 2500.

The Tatula Elite AGS is better for hair jigs between the two if I had to pick. For some reason, I just don’t like the way the Legend Wlite feels fishing them. Probably just too light of a bait for the ML rating.

If I could only pick one as an all-around rod for finesse-style presentations it would be the Legend Elite. The Tatula Elite AGS can handle all of those without a problem but there is a huge difference in feel between the two so it’s whether or not you can justify the extra spending for the Legend Elite.

Thank you for the detailed comparison, rubs 96. That's exactly the kind of info I needed.

This illustrates the disparity in lure ratings among manufacturers. The Legend Elite has a low-end weight rating of 1/8 oz. compared to the Tatula Elite AGS's low-end rating of 3/16 oz., but you have found the latter to be softer and the better caster of 1/16 oz. hair jigs.

I lament the end of the common practice of boxing a spare spool with spinning reels. Seems that ended at about the time that rear-drag spinning reels with pop-off spools gave way to front-drag reels. When I'm wading, I like to have at least one spare spool to change line strength, visibility, and/or stretch as needed.

I have the IMX Pro SJR901S and although the 901S lines are designed for hair jigs, I use mine for everything small.

#3 mepps spinners
3/16 oz crankbaits
ned rigs with 1/10 oz ned rig heads and the TRD soft plastic
3/16 oz crappie sized spinner baits

its an amazing rod, rocket launcher caster for all things small for bass.

its not an UL rod though. not quite that soft.

The 901s is one of my favorite rods, I use mine for drop shotting and its works amazing, I also use it for what's been mentioned above.

Hair jigs, ned rigs and spybaits.

I have the stella on mine and the balance is perfect.

I have a n NRX 901s before the + series came out and it is my favorite ned rig rod over NRX 852s and NRX 822dsr. I use it mainly with 1/15th and 1/10th TRDs and 1.5" Crawz. My wife and I were in Canada 2 weeks ago fishing smallmouth and I gave it to her to use and several 2-4lb smallmouth later I couldn't get it back. Was using 1/10 Z Man heads and green pumpkin TRD. You would be happy with it
