Casting Ned Rig rod
Casting Ned Rig rod
I’m searching for a dedicated Ned rod in the +\- 7’ range…primarily 3-5 gram total weight neds with 6# FC.
The new Phenix Classic BFS 7’1” is catching my attention. Feedback?

Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I use a Phenix K2 713 ML (which skews light in actual power) for this and it works very well. Don't know much about the Phenix Classic, but it might be a good match just based on that kinship.
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
Looking at that rod now, I'd like an update to the K2 line using those aesthetics (lock nut etc.) please!
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I like the Daiwa Steez AGS 6'8" light for Ned's. I have a Phenix K2 713 ML but I use it mostly for small jerkbaits.

That Phenix Classic BFS is nice. It can lack power if you are reefing in hogs around docks and such but, great open water rod. Super fun with dink bass too

My favorite Ned Rig rod is the Fenwick Aces Baitcasting ACES70CLP+J Bait Finesse Special.

I use a conquest and glx 842c but the lowest weight is 1/10 oz net + trd
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I'm loving my Kistler ML (rated 1/16-3/8oz) paired up with a Shimano SLX BFS. I use this outfit exclusively for neds and flick shake.
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I agree with Ryan Sagisi above...and I also just sold (and will miss like hell), a Fenwick Tiemco Golden Wing 610C LP+J to a long standing TT member last week...IMO, it would be about perfect for your stated techs.
Fenwick Tiemco Links/Golden Wing/Aces (and even higher end of you want to push to ~ 100,000 yen) 6'10" and 7'0" LP+J models should absolutely be in the conversation for neds and light plastics and even lighter 1/4-1/3 oz topwaters, and have incredible fit and finish, extremely comfy trigger less reel seat, are very light, sensitive, and have strong backbones.
Good luck.

Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
The Steez AGS 6'8" light has the "megatop" and is an excellent casting ned rod. I prefer to fish ned rigs on spinning however, and the Steez 6'10" "The Ned" is by far my favorite light ned rod - just for information sharing!

Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
What is the "megatop" that you are refering to here?
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I think it's a solid tip rod, with the tip made from carbon. Daiwa has SMT rods (Super Metal Top) with titanium solid tip, i.e. on The Ned (which is an awesome Ned rod, I agree). Megatop is a carbon solid tip that supposedly bends uniformly well in all directions. It should be great for super light baits.Freddie wrote: ↑Tue Sep 19, 2023 1:01 pmWhat is the "megatop" that you are refering to here?
This is just from reading about it - I haven't fished their megatop yet, just the SMT.

Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
That's an accurate description, thank you Drakestar! The Steez 68L casting rod features a solid carbon tip, called a "megatop" versus a "SMT" on "The Ned" 6'10" spinning rod. Both impart an extra fast action to their respective models and make for a very fun on the water experience.Drakestar wrote: ↑Tue Sep 19, 2023 1:55 pmI think it's a solid tip rod, with the tip made from carbon. Daiwa the Sensor is what I use
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible
Re: Casting Ned Rig rod
I would go with the 7'1" Phenix Feather ML or Cashion ICON ML rod.
The Feather has a little faster action that hits the backbone a little faster.
Both are nice
