ML bottom contact rod recommedation

Post by Freddie » Mon Sep 25, 2023 7:34 pm

I'm on the prowl for a dedicated 1/4 oz finesse jig/bottom contact casting rod. Total bait weight=8-12 grams...

Has anyone experience with the Shimano Expride 72ML(A or B?) and would it have have sufficient power?

If I had $600 I'd just get the Daiwa Steez AGS 'The Sensor'...but on paper the Sensor is a little more powerful?

I have the A version of the Expride 72ml+ and use it now for throwing 1/8oz Owner Flashy swimmers or Okashira screwheads with a 2.8 keitech (total weight 8 grams) and it's great for that. Have also used it for throwing 1/8oz jigheads with 3 inch paddletails inshore for slot redfish and it had more than enough power for that as well. Sensitivity is great too.
I also have the Steez ags 69m Universal Light that I use inshore for the same techniques and love it as well, I have no experience with The Sensor though.

The Expride A 72ML has more power than the Expride B 72ML - I know people say the Bs have more power but not in this case.

I throw 1/4oz keitech ball heads with 3" spark shads on both A and B 72ML with 8-10lb fluoro w/o issue...but that's a light wire hook. I'd say any hook gauge thicker than what you would use with straight 12lb fluoro is probably too much hook for the B, but just at the top end for the A.

Haven’t tried that expride so no comment on it. But my recommendation is the Legend Elite 7’6” MLXF. My favourite ML rod and the rod I have fished the most the last two years. Incredible feel to it.

In the Expride price range (around $300) I'd go with a Trika 6x ML over an Expride any day.

6'10" or 7'0" both work, and the 6'10" M is a great (not over-powered) finesse jig rod, as well.

If you can find a used one the Sedition Cristobal is a top notch mag Ml rod with incredible feel, balance, cosmetics and length. It casts incredibly well baits in that 1/4 to 3/8 oz range such as 1/4 jig with a trailer.

Bro, if you're gonna do a photo op, could you at least spool on a usable amount of line first?

Brilliant combo John, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, just wanted to poke him a bit...it's an absolutely gorgeous combo and rare all the way around from custom painted OG Steez to the Sedition Cristobal.

Bro, I spent all my $ on the gear and only had 2 bucks left over for line which only bought me 20 yards

Hog is right, it was after a cast \:D/
