What reel speed do you like for spinner baits

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What reel speed do you like for spinner baits

Post by Bob Ellis » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:31 pm

I got a Curado e7 for a new spinner bait and buzz bait rod, trouble is I like my Cardiff a lot more. Current recommendations are for a faster reel like the e7 for spinner baits. My Cardiff is 5.8:1. My main concern is actually the buzz baits, I never threw them with the Cardiff.

When I learned to fish a 5.8:1 was a fast reel. What do you use?

I love to fish a Spinnerbait everywhere in the water column, everything from slow rolling deep to burn waking the blades.
So I like a middle of the road 6.2:1.

Any spinnerbait from 1/2oz up for me, is more comfortable on a round reel platform in the 5.0:1 to 5.8:1 ratio. For 3/8oz and less, an LP reel is fine.

x2 for VArm, you shouldn't have any problems burning spinner baits with a 6:2-6:4-1 gear ratio. It is also much easier to slow roll versus a 7+:1 gear ratio. Overall it just makes for a versatile setup. You can use your cardiff and you'll be fine, just be prepared to crank like a madman if you want to burn em.

Agreed! The 100 takes up around 24" which is not too fast or slow. 24-25" IPT is good for me. Anymore and I feel too much resistance, any less and I have to crank too fast. I probably could go up in IPT if I was using over 1/2oz baits on flourocarbon though.

Like my 7.1 zillion, I find it easier to slow down then speed up my retrieve.

I like 6.3:1 and use a Diawa Fuego on one setup and a BPS Johny Morris Elite on another setup. I used a Daiwa Millionare CVZ 203 for years and liked them as well even thourgh they are slower. I have small hands so a low profile reel is more comfortable.

6.3:1 reel for spinnerbaits. You can always slow up your retrieve.

The Daiwa TDZ 103ML with a 5.7:1 gear ratio (not too fast, not too slow) has been my go-to SB reel as far back as I can remember.
