Good Cranking Reel?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Good Cranking Reel?

Post by aznevolution8 » Mon Feb 28, 2011 4:26 pm

What's a good cranking reel that is smooth? What speed reel is preferred? My price range is $200.

Shimano E5 for heavy lures and deep cranking. For lighter cranks and shallow cranking, find a good used TDZ 103P.

At $200, the Abu Garcia Revo Winch would be my choice. If you'll be throwing smaller shallow diving cranks, a Daiwa Sol/Alphas would work well too.

The CU200.

And, I agree the Sol is a good reel for light cranks.

200E5 makes a good one.
I don't go to as lower ratio reel unless I'm fishing deeper cranks (over 10ft)
I use a 6.4:1 for shallow cranks (Patriarch XT), and a 5.8:1 for mid depths (TDZ 100M).
If fishing deeper cranks, a lower ration is good.

Another VERY good lower ratio reel for deeper cranking is the Daiwa Zillion Crazy cranker (4.9:1 ratio)

My favorite cranking reel for mid-deeper cranks is the TDZ 100M (got 3 of them :big grin: )

I use a curado 5.0:1 for lipped crankbaits , hard jerkbaits , and spinner baits.

For everything else its a curado 7.0:1

If you want to compromise the citica comes in a 6.3:1 ratio.

I throw jerkbaits on a normal/high speed reel. 6.4:1 or 7.3:1. Not to mention what you want is too broad, if that's the case I'd go with the in between reel speed "6".

My Abu setup is my all around setup, top/spinner/jigs because I use heavier line for this (14lbs - 17lbs).

I say don't stick to one brand only, that will limit your horizon, and I mean greatly limit them.
I will NEVER sell another 3:16 swimbait again!

Sol, light cranks, 200e5, deep cranks. The 200e5 should handle "most" crankbait duties.

Revo Premier in 6.3:1 gear ratio, Curado 50E, or a used Sol would work if I could only have one cranking reel.

I spoke to Shimano reps yesterday complaining about the Curado 200 E7. Great reel but they don't make one in 5:1 for lefty retrieve!

I wouldn't use anything under a 6.1:1 ratio, and would recommend a 7.1:1 really!
You want a faster ratio reel for these applications ;)
You are not "cranking" doing these apps, except for lipless cranks, and when using lipless cranks, you're most likely cranking over grass, so you want a faster ratio in case you need to keep bait above grass, and with a faster reel it's easier to do this. :big grin:
