Core 50MG true drag rating?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Core 50MG true drag rating?

Post by Micropterus salmoides » Thu Mar 03, 2011 4:12 am

The TT review of the Aldebaran lists the drag at 6.8 lbs despite the manufacturer's specs of 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs). The Core 50 MG also has a manufacturer's spec of 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs). Did Shimano North America beef up the drag of the Core 50 MG so that it truly is 9.9lbs? Or is it also really 6.8 lbs, like the Aldebaran?

I have tested 2 Core 50MG reels and both were just a hair over 7lbs. I think the TT review is closer to reality than the manufactures specs.

But to make all things equal, I had put Shimano drag grease on the washers. Not a lot but enough to make it slick.
