Small Baitcaster (easy to palm)

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Small Baitcaster (easy to palm)

Post by SHRIMPER » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:00 am

Good day to all fellow Tackle Tour members.

I would like to get some feedback on a baitcaster that maybe some fellow tackle tour members with small hands
and short fingers use.

I will mainly be using for pitching jigs and plastics and would like o keep it under $200. I was thinking at maybe looking at the discontinued SOL from Daiwa or the Currado 50E. It doesn't have to be either of these brands, these just come to my mind. Where I'm located it's hard to find either of these to hold so any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

The curado 50e is very easy to palm.

I think you're on the right track. The 50E and Alphas/Sol would be the two I'd recommend. Both palm great.

Take a look at the BPS Carbonlite reel. It is a good reel for its price. Not as small as the Sol but just as light. You can find a Daiwa Sol for a good price also if you keep checking the sell board.

I used to own the Sol, and I currently own the 50E. I would recommend going with the 50E for the techniques that you are going to use the reel for. The 50E has a faster retrieve ratio and a smoother drag.

I agree. I have small, arthritic hands, and find the 50 size Shimano Conquests and Calcuttas as easy to palm as any low profile reel.

Love the 50E, it's hard to beat. Pick it up on eBay for under $200 too.

i am 5'2" with small hands and short fingers. i wear a cadet small golf glove (shorter fingers) and even these are sometimes too big. my favorite small reels so far are the alphas that i have. my steez fits very well too. i have a new 51e that i have, as yet, to fish. i need to compare the feel of the 51e to the alphas.

The faster retrieve ratio means little. The right quantity to evaluate the reel's retrieve is IPT (inches per turn) or CPT(centimeters per turn).
So, the Sol retrieves 60 cm per turn while the 50E retrieves 63.5 cm.

More, the higher retrieve ratio can be a two edge blade. On one side gets you more line but if the gearings are not optimized in power transmission, you can get the feel of pulling a trophy fish when you really pulling a dinky...
You can find more about this in the following link.

The ConQuest 50. The Curado 50E. Let your wallet decide for U.

At the $200 price point I'd grab the Sol first, Curado 50E second. I also own a Sol and a Scorpion 1000XT (JDM Version of the Curado 50E). Both palm wonderfully. The Sol has a slight edge construction-wise (again IMO). Can't go wrong with either...so grab whichever appeals to you.

Agree with others, if you have the extra cash the Conquest 50 is the ultimate choice.

If you are considering $200 and the Alphas platform...TD-Z should be in the conversation.

Thank you all guys for all the replies and recommendations. It's much appreciated!

I guess it wouldn't hurt to try the old Tackle Tour modo. Buy them all and see which I find the best for me. :laugh1:
