Luna 103 for Crankbait?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Luna 103 for Crankbait?

Post by Ong Jim » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:08 pm

Will it be silly to use a Luna 103 on a Dobyn 704CB? Luna 103 is 9.7oz vs Zillion Crazy Cranker at 8.8oz. There is a great deal on the 103, about 55% of the cost for a Zillion Crazy Cranker.

The Luna 103 has a 5.8:1 gears, the 203 has 5.1:1 gears but is 10.9oz, I have a 203 and a 253 both reels are very well built and very smooth.

Another Rodney Dangerfield of the round reel bass fishing world...

If you don't grab it....please PM me and let me know where. The Luna 103 is a great alternative to the JDM CVZ 103 for a lot less $$$...plus you get the EAS (external adjustable sideplate).

IMO...only the Calcutta TE GT and higher level round reels from Shimano are "better" overall round reels than the Luna 103.

I love my TDLuna 103 for crankbaits. I used it right along side an HSTA, Fuego, and Zillion casting reels and I honestly felt the Luna was the best casting reel of the bunch. It's got that nice "Z" brake feel to it and really lays those crankbaits out nicely. You ain't gunna spring that bar-stock frame anytime soon!

I pulled the trigger and drove 80 miles round trip to get it. The store is fairly small, but they carry some great reels and high-end baits. The store is Outdoors Sportman in Stockton, CA and their number is (209) 957-4867. They have the Luna 103 and LH Sol for on sale for $149.99, Zillion 7.1 and 6.3 for $219.99. I don't know if they will ship it, but can't beat a Luna 103 for $149.99.

If someone wants to trade a RH to a LH Sol, I'll probably go back and get it.

I could drive out there and get it, and sell it on here. Not looking for a profit, but just cover my gas and the shipping.

I love both my Luna 103's, especially for crankbaiting. They weigh a bit more, but I think they tend to balance longer rods a bit better than some lighter reels. IMO, the Luna feels very refined and smooth on the retrieve. Plus, for being round, it still feels good in hand. It's a very nice reel at $250. At $150, it will simply outperform every reel in the price range.

I think you'll like the 103 on your crankbait rod. :)

Thanks for the reassurance. I feel confident about this purchase. The weather is great, however I will be busy the next three weeks. I'll be lucky if I could get the setup wet in the coming weeks.

Yeah, I had 2 hours before work so I drove out there and got it. The Sol is there, to bad it is a lefty. But maybe it is a good thing, need the money for upgrades. They have one more Luna 103 and if it is still there in 2 weeks, I'll get it. But I'm going to clear some room hopefully have enough to get your 702 to pair with my Type F.

I have been making crankbaits for 11 yrs. I have thown both large and small cranks on a lot of different equipment. If you throw and crank all day long, the lighter your equipment the better. Low profile and light. Those are the key words for a true cranking reel. Trust me. Also, you don't need a reel that will pull a house off of the foundation to crank with. My personal reel for cranking since 2003 has been a Scorpion 1000. That's right, the reel that everyone calls a finese reel that they quickly out grew. I have thrown a #5 Shadrap to a Poes 400 to a DBIII with this reel. NEVER ONE FAILURE!! Ever.

I too thought about either the Luna or the Crazy Cranker. I decided to go with the Crazy Cranker, in fact I bought 2. Have been happy ever since but Cabela's was selling the 103 about 6 months ago for about $150 a pop. I still wonder what could have been if I went with the Luna....
