Reel of the Year 2011

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

I have to say, the battle was ugly. The Zillion Type-R started the year giving me a record and some god size fish. Then the newcomers Steez (100 & 103) SHA had to be tested.

The year ended with me fishing all of them so I guess this is a tie in first place.
I just cant see myself going fishing without taking the Zillions, the Steezs and also the Alphas. :big grin:

Next year the house will be more crowded probably with some Zs amd T3s :-$ :big grin:

I still love my 'tuned' Fuego's. Those were my highest end reels but 2 T3s and a Zillion were added for next year!

My favorite is the Z2020. Best casting reel in my limited reel experience but still diverse enough to say this is the one. Second would be the Zillion Type R but mostly because of form factor. If there was a Z1016 then I'd sell my Zillions and newly acquired Ryogas. Seriously thinking about dumping my Pluton for another Z and I already have two of them. What else can you throw Hudd 8s with and Senkos regardless of wind speed or in your face gusts. Yes, it's not cheap and you can get 2-4 of something else and I see the value in that but I trophy hunt and one rig is really all I want and often need. The only reason for three is because the weight range I throw requires that many rods. Give me a stick that's XF with 1/2 to 6 and I'll be content with a Z2020HL that's fast enough for punching/frogging but has enough torque for most wake baits and those bigs Hudds. :)

Great! I can get two Kias for the price of a Mercedes too. Pointless!

This thread is not the "Value Reel of the Year". It is the one you reached for most last year.

Reel for me; Zillion with TDZ-100 spool, carbontex drag washers, boco orange 7's, new gears and handle... otherwise it's stock. :big grin:

My reel of the year was a Curado 50E. I started out with a 200E7, didn't like it AT ALL, traded it for a 50E, and it was game on. I really liked that reel. I'll admit, I'm not a Shimano guy...at all. But that little gem served it's purpose and was smooth in the process. I just wished it had a faster gear ratio and the Power Grips.

I caught 2 of my 3 biggest fish this year on the 50E. It handles light baits and light line like a champ, but can throw a frog with 65# braid into some NASTY places with ease.

I'm about to get real serious with some "bigger" baits, but my current favorite (and only reel  ) is the custom Premier from Daniel. The way I see it, it's pretty much the same thing as a Revo Elite Aurora. If that's totally not the case, don't hate me.

I had a Chronarch D7 for two days, returned it. Almost bought a Steez 100HA from Tim for a killer deal, didn't have the money. Then I settled for the Premier from Daniel for a stellar price. Learning to cast a reel with ZERO spool tension has made me a much better caster when I thought I was pretty damn good already.

Seriously, that 50E was a sweet little thing.

Interesting thread...
No mention of a pixy...
Think mine is my 04 pixzilla! Dice I have upgraded the handle I just love fishing with it. Even if I miss a few sometimes due to the slow gear ratio while senko fishing.

I've thought about it and it's a little sad that I don't have anything new for 2011. The truth is that what I have is just that good. My "Reel of the Year for 2011" is my Pixzilla...or my Conquest 50S...or my Calais DC7.

I acquired a few new reels since last fall/winter do I got to finally use them this past year. My reel of the year candidate is without a doubt the Calais 200DC! Absolutely amazing!
