Casting Vs Spinning

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Casting Vs Spinning

Post by BRONZEBACK32 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:22 am

When do you choose a spinning reel over a casting reel, or the other way around?

For me super light baits 1/16-3/16oz and areas were I'm covered by trees and brush, also skipping baits is when I hit the spinning rods.

IMO if you don't use both you have a dis-advantage.

Also what do you prefer?

8lb line & lighter I'll go spinning, anything over I'll use casting.

Let me see, I have no Spinning gear nor have I purchased a spinning setup in the last 5yrs, Pixy-R, Alphas and SOLs, I would believe I am in the "Casting only" camp!

I use both, maybe 50/50. Each can be great fishing tools and with proper practice are equally effective. My big fish this year came on spinning gear (over 6). Some think a spinning rig will not catch big fish, I suggest you ask Redfish guys about that. There is a time and place for both.

I only use spinning gear for UL panfishing now so I guess I'll vote BC.

like them both but casting is now 90% of what I do when I go fishing. Still keep buying new spinning reels for some reasons. :big grin:

UL panfish, weightless plastics, light spinner baits, light jigs, skipping lures, shakey heads, dropshot, etc. on spinning gear

Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, jigs, plastics, musky stuff, etc. on casting

I use each about 50/50, although I plan on making a lighter casting blank for the lighter stuff and pairing it with a core 51mg. Should be great for light tubes, spinnerbaits, and plastics for smallies.

I can get some good distance with my Chronarch D7 with 3/16oz.
My Chronarch is loaded with Orange seals and the internals have been polished, the reel cast light baits with
ease using one grey brake on and I love it.

With that said my spinning reel will out cast my Chronarch in the light weight casting with the same amount of weight.

Here is a thought.

I can use a spinning reel with a Medium heavy rod and have that extra power and cast light lures, now if I did
the same with a baitcaster using a MH rod then its not happening....hope that makes sense.

I think I have argued this with Nitroman in the past, he is just stubborn :big grin:

I'm like everybody else in that I tend to use spinning gear when throwing small lures on light line. I also have the handle of my spinning reel on the opposite side from my baitcaster and it's kind of nice to switch back and forth between them to help reduce arm fatigue.
