Core 100MG vs. Core 100MG7

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Core 100MG vs. Core 100MG7

Post by goldrod » Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:39 pm

I know that one has the 6.3:1 gear ratio (aluminum) and
the other the 7.0:1 witht the brass gearing. When you consider $349.00 vs $399.00 is the MG7 worth the extra money? I am really straddle the fence and since reading these forums I have kinda talked myself out of a steez and now trying to decided between these two reels. I'd love to have the steez or so I thought but I read were you guys have paid such a premium price just to send it off and have it tuned, drag upgraded and such.

So back to my initial question on the two cores which would you choose and why?

The Core 100MG7 is an excellent reel and worth the extra cost to me. There is just something a little different about the MG7 versus the MG. I know some of that may be the brass gearing and the power handle which I would prefer. Both cast very well out of the box and handle a wide range of baits very well. I think it also depends on what u want to do with the reel. Both are excellent reels and can't go wrong with either.

As for the Steez, I have less experience than most on here but I believe the 100 ha and 100 sha models tend to be better out of the box and not as difficult to dial in. I have no had no issues with either the 100 sha and 100 ha. I also have a 100 sha that has been tuned. It is on another level for sure, but I can also say I am very happy with my other 100 sha out of the box.

You could also purchase a core100mg and upgrade the gears from a cronarch d7 ..... It will make your reel weight an extra 0.5oz but you could horse pigs out of grass........ Please contact the guys at tackle trap , they can hook you up with everything ...

why buy the 100mg just to upgrade the gears? I have the 100mg7 and its great I did add bearings to the handle just because I had them but it a slick reel and if you don't like the red accents then its a clear choiceImage

The Core 100Mg7 hasn't really appealed to me much. I have a Scorpion 1001XT that weighs the same, is smaller in profile, has brass gears and 1 more bearing each in the handle knobs. Ofcourse the Core 100Mg7 has a 7:1 gear ratio and an 84mm handle with the power knobs. But I don't know if that's enough for me to spend the extra $100+ on the Core 100Mg7 over the Scorpion.

Wouldn't the 7.1 on a 100 size spool be considerably faster then 6.1 on a 50'size spool of the Scorpion? For some applications the 30" pickup could be worth the $100 premium. Don't get why they put 84mm handles on US version reels. The extra 6mm is noticeable and now it's annoying after having most of my reels be 90 or greater. Perhaps the Japanese have smaller hands but I like the extra beef and see the need for an upgrade. Just a rant.

Core 100GM7 all the way.
1. Big comfy knobs.
2. 85mm Bearing upgradeable handle, it comes with bushing, but easily upgraded to 2 bearings per knob.
3. 7:1 brass gear is smoother feel comparing to aluminum gear on the metanium mg7.

Optional part: 34MM BFS spool. Now you got a pitching casting machine that has the power to winch just about anything out of the water.

I guess it depends on what you'll be using it for!

I have the 100MgFV (flipping version) and love it for senkos. I wish I bought the 100Mg as well (BNIB for $249 at the local shop) because it would've been awesome for spinnerbaits lol. The weight difference between my Core/Chronarch 50Mg and Calais/Chronarch B is incredible. So much more enjoyable to fish with now!
