The Tale of Two D's

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

The Tale of Two D's

Post by goldrod » Wed Sep 05, 2012 7:06 pm

So I've brought me two 100DSV Curados,
changed out the handles, put in some orange seals, and one has the chronarch 50mg spool, and the other 100D spool. I am looking for some grey brakes for the reels but I must say they cast just about par with my E50 curados.

The only thing I have left to change out is the drag but I dont suppose I will need to beef up the drag for the style of fishing I will be doing with them.

Any difference in the way they behave that you can attribute to the two different spools?

At first I was a bit skeptical, but after casting the 50mg spool seems to cast lighter weights.
It seems to hold less line as well but I haven't measured it. They are great upgrades to the 100DSV.
I may just get get another one and use it for pitchn.

I found a couple of new 201D's and I'm sold, my B & E Curados are for sale now. The D's are great reels that had poor marketing.

I have been casting these two reels and they are amazing. I really like the senshi line as well. I use one on a Powell max rod 704 for senko/flukes basically weightless plastics and for 100dsv reels you'd never know.
Everything from the handle to the ergonomics is just perfection.

I do have some 200D around and I don't think I will part with them, to me they are just solid work stallions

Point of interest i think would be i am using the clear breaks.
I am in spinning reel territory on the 50mg spool

Using a 6'8" cork crucial worm rod, I paird it with the 100 with the Mg spool and I can cast a zoom trick worm weightless effortlessly. I had an 1/8 tungsten weigh on it with 12# test and after three or so cast I knew the weight had to be removed.
I can't say enough about this reel. Its been a top notch performer

The D series were built like tanks and were great casters. Unfortunately, at 9.9 oz, they weigh almost as much as a tank, too. The 300DSV holds nearly twice the line and only weighs 0.7 oz more.

Poor marketing was not the downfall of the 200 sized Ds...it was the public favor for lighter, high plastic content OEM and non MIJ reels. I suppose most of the younger gen doesn't armcurl much more than a beer bottle, eh? And a plastic beer bottle to boot to save some weight! :P

HSTA Daiwa is in the same boat.

Well I am back and this time I have the two 100DSV's modified as above but today
I took out both the scorpion 1000 one with orange seals and carbonex drag. Both
have calasis handles. So enlight of the new reels on the market I kinda find myself
going back to the faithful fun bunch. The scorpion reel with no upgraded bearings on
a cumara med exft rod I found extremely well suited for senko style baits. The other scorpion
with the upgraded drag was great for pitchin. As close as the 100Ds that I have are they are
still very different in the field. I used the 100DSV frames because they have the harder compared
to the 100D. I find that I used them for jerkbaits as well as worms.
