Shimano Core 50 durability questions

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano Core 50 durability questions

Post by i_am_R2 » Tue Jan 01, 2013 8:21 pm

Hi All,

I have never owned an Mg reel so was hoping to get some information. Have any of your ever had any corrosion issues with the Core 50/51? I know there is a special coating for protection but do they require more maintenance than aluminum reels?

Thanks in advance all!

If you fish fresh water, you should have zero problems. I have numerous magnesium reels (Core 50 MG incl) with no corrosion issues.

Same here. In fresh water, no problems, no corrosion, no extra maintance/care required.

I use Core50mg7 reels while wading in saltwater. I spray the reels with a fine water mist after use and keep the spool bearings oiled every trip which is 2-3 days. I also dry the reels inside and out each night. I tear down the reels every 6 months to clean them thoroughly

Any reel dunked gets torn down for a complete cleaning that night.

No problems.

You take care of your reel very well.
