new abu mgx is only 4.9oz.
What do you think?
I am not a big fan of light weight reel. Any reel lower than 5.5oz feels like paper to me.

What's the difference between 5.5 and 4.9oz? 10% or so...
Don't think 6/10ths of an ounce will make that big of a difference between solid and paper.
Kudos to Abu if it is 4.9 and holds up

Re: new abu mgx is only 4.9oz.
Don't care for it, as I've stated in other MGXtreme threads. It's pretty much an MGX with some cosmetic changes & a slight weight reduction, which is quite inconsequential when you get below 6-7 ozes IMO. The fact that it costs $150 more than a regular MGX took any interest I might've had in it & flushed it down the drain. All 10 of my LP reels are Revos, so I'm not hating it because I'm a fanboy of some other brand, but with this price & lack of anything new other than a slight weight reduction, this reel is about as appealing as a cheese grater to the genitals to me.

There are several other recent threads on this one. Lots of thoughts in those you could check out.mikezho wrote:What do you think?

The core51mg7 and steez are light enough for me. 4.9oz is intriguing, might get one to try but $500 for an Abu is crazy. Might see them on fleabay for three and change after launch.

thanks. I will check the other threads.jeb wrote:There are several other recent threads on this one. Re: new abu mgx is only 4.9oz.
I see lots of negativity surrounding this reel
I give props to Abu for having achieved a Sub 5oz reel.
Isn't this, in some way, every companies goal?
"Daiwa's Pixy baitcasters have long been touted as the lightest baitcasters available in the market today. The Pixy PX68 weighs 5.6 ounces right out of the box. That's lighter than Daiwa's flagship reel, the Steez"
So now 4.9oz is to light?
I won't be purchasing this reel, but for one reason only.....500$

My hats off the Abu for pushing the envelope in terms of light weight casting reels. I think you will see other companies follow the trend. If its light, smooth, and feels rigid than what's the downside? If Shimano and Daiwa can have flagship reels than why can't Abu?

I agree.......Why not Abu.njbasscat wrote:My hats off the Abu for pushing the envelope in terms of light weight casting reels. I think you will see other companies follow the trend. According to TT reviews, the Steez is 5.5oz and the Pixy is 5.7 or 5.8, depending on model. The Core 50 might be 5.4oz, but I'm not aware of any USDM reels currently lighter than that.mikezho wrote:pixy, steez.jeb wrote:What other reels less than 5.5 ounces that you've owned/used?I am not a big fan of light weight reel.
