Your most versatile reel
Re: Your most versatile reel
My old plain Green Curado CU 101B.
Re: Your most versatile reel
Daiwa ITO 103ML or any of my TDZ line up
Re: Your most versatile reel
Something around a 6:1 ratio.
So a core 100 or chronarch 50 would work good.

Daiwa zillion 6:3.1 gear ratio.Strong drag, good casting distance, powerfull retreive, reliable.Everything a bass fisherman need.
Re: Your most versatile reel
Bit like trying to drive off a green with a putter
The most versatile reel I use, and would not go anywhere without it is a Calais 100A. Can most anything you ask it to, and then some.

Re: Your most versatile reel
Any decent reel with a 6:1 gear ratio. Or any reel really. When I go hike-fish I take 1 rod with 2 reels, a slow reel & fast reel.
Tbh I carry 2-3 reels mainly for backlashes if I was only to take one it would prob be the calais

Re: Your most versatile reel
I would have to say for me it is the Zillion HA 6.3 or TDZ R+. They both can do pretty much anything I need a reel to do.
Re: Your most versatile reel
Steez 103. I don't throw many baits over 3/4 oz though.
Re: Your most versatile reel
Z2020H in the bass fishing arena....3/8oz - 4oz rather handily.

+1
I do throw anything from small flick shake up to 1oz jigs with trailers (rod is more weight sensitive than the reel).
Re: Your most versatile reel
Calais DC!
Great for everything! From plastics to jerks/cranks, and jigs to spinnerbaits! From perch to bass/pike/walleye, and carp/catfish to steelhead and salmon! I LOVE THIS REEL.

Re: Your most versatile reel
I got my TD-Z 103ML at the end of last season. Only got to play with it for about a half hour, so I can't speak from experience. I will say the reason I got it was because some guys feel it is one of the best casting reels ever made. Of the reels I have used, I would say my Fuego is one of the best all-around reels I have. Love my 51E for the lighter stuff, but haven't tried anything over about 1/2 oz with it so far. I don't see why it wouldn't do as well with heavier lures. Usually it is the other way around....a reel can handle a heavy lure, but too light may cause problems.Hogsticker2 wrote:What is the most diverse reel you have used? Casting big/small, light/heavy. So your shore bound, or can only take one reel for whatever reason. Not knowing what you may have to use, maybe a spinnerbait, medium size plug, finesse jig, weightless plastic...whatever. I wouldn't know, I don't own that reel yet. I'm kinda hoping a TDZ 103M might be a cost effective option.
My personal opinion is that there are tons of reels available that will do what want. I love my Zillion, but so far have never tried a light lure with it. However, there is at least one spool out there that should allow it to handle light lures fairly effectively. It is all in how much you are willing to spend.
The rod is what limits my lure selection (weight wise) more so than the reel. I don't let the reel's ratio limit my use of the reel either. Sure a 7:1 is better than a 5:1 if you are going to be cranking a lure fast all day long, but for occasional use, it ain't going to kill me. Might even improve my cardie-vascular system.

By the end of last season my answer would have been my Shimano CTE-200GT but this past winter has given me time to rebuild my "herd" and I'm looking forward to seeing how things shake out with the new additions in the pending LMB season.
Re: Your most versatile reel
I agree! My Antares AR (bought JDM because Calais 100A not available as a lefty 101A) can pretty much do anything that I need it to do, all the while looking awesome and being super smooth!Zimbass wrote:Bit like trying to drive off a green with a putter
