Chronarch 50mg and Core 50mg

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Chronarch 50mg and Core 50mg

Post by Bass1980 » Sun Jun 23, 2013 11:09 pm

I can find some used chronarch mg and core mg's for good prices. The price difference is usually about $50-$70 with the Chronarch mg being $180-200 used. For people that have use both reels how much better is the core since I've heard from many people already that their all time favorite shimano reel is the Chronarch mg. Also what about parts availability for the older chronarch mg. Will there still be replacement parts for this reel 5-10 yrs from now?

Looking to get one in two weeks so comments are welcome.

Darn forgot to add the Chronarch D in there too. Any info on which to go for?

I have and use both. I find them to be comparable performance-wise. I liked the CH50MG for it's original MSRP and it's feather weight at the time. It was one of Shimano's finest efforts combining performance and value IMO.

The Core 50MG is top tier reel. Light weight but priced $100 + more than the CHMG50 at retail. Probably one reason the CH50MG has such a following. Quite a deal considering what you got for your money. I find the Core 50MG to be very close to Steez performance for a lot less money.

The finish on the CH50MG is not a durable as the Core finish. The clear-coat peels off over time. Also the CH50MG brake access key is a bit annoying compared to the Core 50. The CH50MG has to be unscrewed (a number of full revolutions) before the side plate pops and bake weights adjusted. The Core's side plate can be opened but a quarter turn of the access key.

Certainly parts could be a problem with a CH50MG, but there should be some crossover of parts between it and reels in production today.

Since we are comparing, the CH50Mg frame is a more similar profile to the Core 100, as opposed to the Core 50. Core 50 is smaller in hand, if you care

Chronarch D is a different reel altogether...think first gen Metanium MG and Core 100. If I were to want an LP reel for deep cranks and big slow rolled spinnerbaits, the Chronarch D5 would be very high on my list.

What techs do you want the reel for?

I will be using one for light cranks like shad raps. Those light weight cranks are a pain to cast but hoping a finess reel and 7'3 medium action rod will do the trick.

Also one for weightless plastic like senkos and flukes for smallies.

Regarding the gear ratios (IPT), the CH50Mg may be more enjoyable with the crankbait...and you may like the Core for faster line pick up on plastics...

Smoothness of retrieve, and cast ability is all I really want to know along with tuning and repair availability in the future.

Shad Raps require the right line and rod as well as reel. I personally think you need a L-ML powered rod.

I believe there is a Yumeya spool upgrade for this platform of reels that will help, or maybe that upgrade is for the CU E/current Scorpion 1000 XT platform? Conquest 50/50S RH/LH series is another beautiful Shimano reel for such light balsa baits.

May I suggest an Aldebaran MG.
The JDM version of the Core50.
It comes in two gear ratios. 5.8:1 and 7:1
5.8:1 gear ratio is great for smaller cranks.
I use mine for cranks and spinnerbaits. Does a great job.
You can get a new one shipped cheaper than a new Core 50.

I have been using a Kistler Argon 6'9" crankbait rod and a Chronarch 50 MG loaded with 10lb. BPS mono to throw #5 and #7 Shad Raps for the past 4 yrs. On the #5 I replace the belly hook with a #6 Owner ST-41 trebble. It does an excellent job.
I will admit.... the Aldebaran MG sounds like a real good choice too.

That is a great length for those sized Shad Raps...years ago Falcon manufactured a 6'9" ML Expert and I had mine paired with an original Burgundy color Scorpion 1000. Anything from just shy of 1/4 to upwards of 3/8oz was absolutely in the sweet spot for this combo. I have yet to fish another factory rod that fished like this original Expert...miss that combo for sure!

Another overlooked reel that can do the job, while being smoother, more powerful than the listed reels, and is about as good as it gets in an LP Shimano for cranks IMO; is the Calais 100/Antares AR. That is my choice for LP cranking/open water power-cranking techs. Casts incredibly well, and is as good as it gets for the feel and function that made Shimano famous.

Good luck!

Wow thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I may just end up getting a tuned and upgraded Curado 51e but will look into those reels.
